Well the Xtra strength has pretty much take care of the flies inside the coops. There are still flies outside so I'm going to get some stinky traps and hang them away from the coops cause they make me gag!!
I just noticed that there is an "extra strength" Vanillaroma Tree available. I noticed that last years trees seem to be stronger and last longer than the ones this year, so I'm wondering if that is the issue.
I ordered some of the "xtra strength" ones off Amazon today, so I'll keep you posted...

Is there a particular place you need to hang it? I have zillions of flies on my patio...
As long as it isn't exposed to the rain. You might need to hang several of them for maximum effect. I recently bought 2 cans of the spray so I can refresh the "trees" every week or so. Need to...
I thought it was about time for the flies to start buzzing around and wanted to re-up this thread for the testimonials.
Another thing that has worked well inside my barn is the automatic air freshener that sprays every 10 minutes or so (you can adjust the time) with a vanilla refill in it...
They may not be as effective in the wide open. Inside our barn (kind of like the tackroom area) I have one of those battery operated automatic air fresheners with a can of the vanilla fragrance in it. There are NO flies in the barn anymore! Inside the coops they have protection from the rain...
I read about it somewhere...I swear I think it was here on BYC and I'd love to give the right person the credit.
All these years we've battled flies every way possible and to think that a few vanilla trees could combat them easily!!
After the last week here with humidity in the 90's along with temps in the 90's and a heat index of 105-110.....if this vanilla tree wasn't going to work it would have failed by now.
But after "recharging" the trees with the spray, there still aren't any flies in the coops, barn, porches or...
We ran out of human insect repellent and I had to be outside around the barn yesterday so I rubbed one of the "trees" all over my legs and arms and it kept the mosquitoes away for about 5 hours.
I read about using fabric softener sheets too, but forgot about that until I was typing this!

I'm telling you this is the truth!! I went through 2 days ago and gave each tree a quick recharge with the aerosol spray. We have had absolutely NO flies in our coops since hanging the trees a couple of months ago.
After 2 weeks I've been recharging the trees with the same brand/fragrance that comes in a small aerosol can. I hold the nozzle right up to the tree and give it a quick burst or two. This give it enough recharge for another couple of weeks.
I found he aerosol a Auto Zone. I found the 12...
OK all you Magic Tree Vanillaroma users.....any updates from the weekend?
It's been so hot and humid here (heat index was 115 on Saturday) that I don't see how a fly could survive...but I'm sure they are like roaches and Cher!!
Maybe I could construct a scientific experiment.
Take 2 identical large plastic storage containers and put both of them on the front porch but a minimum of 20 feet apart. Put chicken poop in the bottom of both of them. Hang a vanilla magic tree in one of them. Then see if the flies stay out...
Carolyn&Ron :
Can anyone with more experience than we have--7 yrs of chickens, besides that we both grew up with chickens, give us some advice?
We have a 2 month old chicken, one of 3 that we hatched, that is from a barred rock rooster and a hen who has a lot of feathers on her head and...
