We're doing great. Had quite a few ups and downs with the sheep and goats. Wife is now doing farmer markets and we're selling eggs, lamb, and chicken. We just ordered 90 more layers. Our great Pyrenees are allowing us to free range all day, so we now have the space, and we needed more eggs to...
We've been buying from Meyer Hatchery for two years now (240 birds per year). We've had pretty good luck, but wanted to see if there are better or cheaper hatcherys for Cornish x.
Made a slight change to the next box doors. We were tired of opening doors to see what was inside and I was worried about the kids opening to find a snake. Cut out the middle and added HW cloth. Had to add the strips for strength.
7 weeks. Process next week. I think you have the right answer... Was hoping to make it to next week, but agree on suffering and growth in the wrong direction.
Thank you!
We have 120 broilers in two 10x12 tractors. We have one that wouldn't walk and was shivering, so we took it it to the garage. It's been in the garage for three days with off and on heat lamp. It's eating a little, drinking, and pooping. But it still won't put weight on it's right leg...
We put them in a "turkey tractor" at age 4 weeks, and let them free range in the afternoon. At 6 weeks, they were allowed outside full time. They don't mind the weather at all. YouTube "Joel Salatin Turkey's" for some good info. You can see part of the tractor in the background in this pic...
Got the second set of egg boxes up. Took a panoramic shot so you can see the relationship to the perches. All is still going great. 2 hours of grass time a night is cutting their food bill down significantly. About to order 30 Turkeys and 120 meat chickens! We're crazy!
Thanks all, loving our setup, but realizing we need some sand or deep litter in the run. Big space, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
Here's a video of letting the chicks out tonight to get a little free range:
Good news, she's survived now for two months. She seems to be thriving now. She's still a little slower than the other girls. We call her 'baby' and she sings back at us when we call her. She is definitely different, but doing well. Still not sure if she may be a he. She looks like a Rhode...
We finished one set of nest boxes. Pictorial below.
Made a simple brace to go under the nest box. The long piece sits against the wall inside the coop. We added a middle brace too.
Fabbed up a box to go on the outside of the coop.
Added hasps, which will also have caribiners in them...
