There is a poultry auction about an hour north of my place, stuff can go for $2 or $8 a chicken, just depends. So it I would not have an issue selling surplus, just maybe an issue with prices on my surplus.
I have been thinking about doing a mix of turkeys and chickens and maybe a breeding trio of ducks or geese. I understand local markets vary place to place but is there much of a demand for heritage/dual purpose chickens like barred rocks?
If you don't mind me asking, what do charge per poult and how many do you sell per year. A breeding trio would eat around 900 pounds a year and I can buy feed in bulk at $8 a bag. That's 18 bags for a total of $144. At $5 a poult, it would take 28-30 poults to break even. Is this a reasonable...
Have not tested thoroughly yet, but it only takes about 2-3 hours to heat completely; that is not bad considering the size of the incubator and how small the heater is. Air does circulate well. If you watch the video, I show both fans, the second fan is shown at 2 minutes 10 seconds. One fan...
I recently bought this huge homemade incubator that holds over 700 chicken eggs or 3400 quail eggs. Thought I'd share this incubator with everyone if you want ideas.

That defiantly makes a lot of sense! Thanks! how much is a pair eating a week and how much is your feed? I buy layer feed in bulk and that averages about just under $8 a bag. I have raised waterfowl on a game bird maintenance/oats/scratch grain mix and have not noticed a difference at all in egg...
Yes. I don't have the best set up for pheasants. When you say pheasants, do you mean just typical ring-neck or do you think ornamental breeds are profitable too? I know there may not be a lot of money in waterfowl but I enjoy them and I have the most knowledge on waterfowl
I have found a quality show bird hatchery. They have some Saxony, appleyard, Cayuga, Swedish, rouens, aleysbury, Buff, and runners. I might choose the buff, appleyard, rouen, or saxony. Or two of the breeds above. I'd keep my top quailty birds in a trio or 4:1 male ratio and the rest for just...
Is it profitable to breed and sell turkeys? heritage not production type (probably bourbon red or Narraganset) Probably sell poults or eggs. or maybe hatch and raise to sell for market or breeding to others
Is there any money in breeding ducks? What if you can't find a large local market? Is selling at shows a viable way of selling and still making a profit?
Like I said, the numbers are not 100% accurate due to the nature of some of the websites, I collected data from. But you are totally right, that is a lot of production for a heavy duck. Just wanted to post this because the data that is accurate is better in my opinion than just a site saying...
I have probably narrowed out the Alyesbury unfortunately... I will probably look into breeds that lay more eggs so I have more to sell or more to try and hatch. I really like the rouens and since my separation fences that I plan on setting up for breeding season are only 3 feet tall, I'd trust...
Would it be easy to sell Alyesbury hatching eggs or grown stock if I buy some and start breeding them? I might be able to get my hands on some white/pink billed deep keel alyesbury ducks. I kinda want to breed them.

What are your thoughts on the Swedish or Cayuga? You are right that your magpies are popular. Medium sized ducks seem to sell well. Would their be an issue with penning ducks with geese; don't want ducks and geese to breed each other (I have heard of that happening. The most I can do is split my...
