According to the shrink bag companies, a 5-8lb chicken will fit into a 10x16 size bag. I have some ziploc bags that are 10 inches across and I don't see how my fat Cornish Xs (6-7lbs) are going to fit in that. They're almost as wide as they are tall.
Have you had problems with your chickens...
I've found that I rarely roast a whole chicken. I always end up cutting up the chicken into pieces before cooking. I'd like to do this prep work as part of the butchering process. Then I could freeze the chickens already cut up, instead of freezing them whole. I'd also like to bone out the...
My cornish cross will be ready to butcher next month and the last thing on my list to get is a killing cone or two. I tried cutting a traffic cone but I'd rather just buy a nice, easy to wash stainless steel one. There used to be someone on here that made them but I don't remember whol. Where...
Or is it more of a greyish color? And since 'coral' is an orangey color, why the heck do they use it to describe blue?
Last time I bought guineas I got an assortment of colors. I was a bit disappointed that the blue colors were mostly just different shades of grey. Maybe if the light hit...
I have 17 acres of pastures and woods and need help with tick control. I started out with 30 guineas three years ago and they totally eliminated the ticks, but over the last 3 years they've gotten picked off one by one. I suspect we lost all the females when they were setting on eggs. We have...
I have a love-hate relationship with my guineas. ok, mostly hate. Instead of ranging over the pastures and woods, eating ticks and minding their own business, they prefer to hang out in the barn or with the chickens. They screech at the top of their lungs whenever anyone is outside. Because...
This is the first time I've saved the hearts and gizzards from my butchering. I'm going to mince them together in the food processor and can them with broth in pint jars. Then I can use them to make dirty rice or giblet gravy.
My question is about trimming the hearts. How much do you trim...
2 years ago I bought my first batch of Cornish X chicks from Schlects. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was that the chicks felt super heavy in my hand. They were about the same size as regular chicks, but they felt like they weighed twice as much. They grew well and I was very...
This is my third year raising meaties and I'm having a much higher fatality rate this year. I'm wondering if it's the new metal feeders or my feeding method.
I soak my chicken feed in milk for 12 hours before feeding it. The last two years I used rubber feed pans and poured the wet feed in...
I ruptured a gall bladder on one chicken I butchered. I hosed it off well but it left a green stain on the skin on the back. Will it taint the skin or the meat underneath it? Should I pull the skin off and discard it or discard the whole bird? How bad of a booboo is that?
Thanks!
There was an ad in the local paper under poultry that said:
GIANT YELLOW BUFF DIDDLES, $2. each.
So of course I had to call and ask him what the heck is a giant yellow buff diddle? I thought it was some kind of chicken hybrid like a Labradoodle. He talked for 20 minutes telling me about...
I visited a farm 2 years ago and saw the most beautiful pale gold chickens. They looked like a much lighter version of Buff Orpingtons. Kind of a strawberry blonde color. They were just stunning. The farmer said they were a cross between Buff Orpingtons and White Rocks. They found that...
I have a duck and drake for sale. They were purchased as ducklings last year from Cackle Hatchery. They're about 10 months old.
These are for pickup only. I'm in western NC, between Boone and Wilkesboro.
Last year my goose laid 14 eggs. I tried to hatch them in my incubator and failed. So this year I decided to let her handle it. Well, so far she's laid 9 eggs. It looks like she's setting on them at night but gets off all day to roam around the yard. I would think the first couple probably...
She has a nest in her house with 4 eggs in it. But this one she laid outside. So maybe she knew there was something wrong with it?
It's still warm, I brought it inside. Can I put it in the incubator? Or should I just dispose of it?
Is this a common thing or a nutritional deficiency...
I think they make a lot of sense and have followed a lot of their teachings. However, I just found out they don't approve of pressure cooking/canning. And hence my question to you guys.
I usually put my chicken carcasses in the crockpot and let them simmer for a day and then I can the...
I butchered them 2 weeks ago and put the whole carcasses in ziplock bags in the spare fridge to rest for a couple of days. Well, I got ambushed by a bunch of Life and today's the first free day I've had to finish processing them. Apparently I had the fridge turned down too low because all the...
I'm going to be butchering the last of my meaties today. Then I'd like to try a couple of ducks while I'm all set up. Is there anything different about them, anatomically, from chickens that I should know? They're 5 month old Anconas.
From reading on here I'm going to: scald at a higher...
It's like the foot is turned around backwards or it bends back at the joint. Obviously he doesn't walk very well and spends a lot of time on his back flailing around trying to turn over. Is this something that can be fixed or will straighten out on it's own? Or is it a fatal flaw and I need...
Do ducks eat eggs? I was getting 4-6 eggs a day from my 6 runner hens. And then, one day, nothing. No more eggs! What gives?
They share a house with a pair of geese and the goose was setting. Is it possible the goose (or gander) is eating all the duck eggs to eliminate competition or for...
