That's very exciting! I hope she keeps it up and manages to successfully hatch some of them! I have zero expertise so cannot offer advice, so encouragement is all I can give :thumbsup Let us know how she goes!
Fellow Australian quail keeper here! We are a rare breed in these parts, but this is the best forum for quail help so you're in the right place. :welcome I'm only just over a year into my quail journey but happy to be helpful anytime I can re local related stuff. I'm in NSW :thumbsup
This is the game bird layer I can get where I am: https://www.petbarn.com.au/peckish-game-bird-layer-finisher-18kg?sku=126090&gclid=Cj0KCQjw08aYBhDlARIsAA_gb0c09dXwNaSZUC57SfaZONuY4GxXheb3wreHyKrLmhpcYXis_HbKn_waAv5XEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
It's only 18% protein feed, but that's the best I can get...
Haha, not rice, it's their shell grit mix for calcium. They eat a game bird layer feed and then whatever bugs I find when I'm gardening. Do you think I need to adjust or add anything?
I assume all noises my quail make translate to "RUN AWAY, GIANT MONSTER INCOMING, SAVE YOURSELVES!" because they always give me that fearing-for-their-lives vibe whenever I visit :gig
Depends on the amount of space you have to house them, and whether the long-term cost of keeping them is worth it. Would you keep them for breeding?
Perhaps a quail broth/stock is the way to go if they're not super meaty 😂
Or dog food? :idunno I like to consider the quality of life if they have...
I was definitely considering separating them if it got any worse - I only have females so no males causing problems, which would have been much more straightfoward! 😩 I'm keeping an eye on them to see if they start to chill out or escalate so I can step in if needed.
Ditto that question! Any ideas as to what it might be @Kiki?
It seems to be very targeted to the head, they're not looking scruffy or like they're moulting any of their other feathers. My white lady has been particularly affected, and generally she's at the bottom of the pecking order which...
Totally re the male scalping! Bit confused by the female to male behaviour shift, what should I be looking out for? There's also a potential for them to be ageing out as I bought them as adults and the breeder kept them mixed so he wasn't sure about age when I got them - although it's just super...
I have two dogs and they definitely stress the birds out when they have access to the outside of the coop (which they only have under supervision). Because the quail are flighty and shoot up/ run in sudden bursts it really triggers my dogs, who are usually fairly docile, into lunging towards the...
That's great that there's demand! I bought my ladies as adults and I am waayyy too daunted to try hatching my own! The investment in equipment and space to breed is too much for me. Happy with my little group of gals and the eggs I get to eat 🤣
