Hello there,
I have 8 chicks around 9 weeks old outside in their coop and run. We have one barnevelder who is pecking feathers off the other chicks. How do we know if it’s just pecking order issues or if that chick is being a bully?
I’m worried the flock might be getting stressed out and...
Usually we see the question, how to integrate chicks into with the big girls coop. How about the reverse? We might be getting an amazing home for our chicks, but they come with 4 hens. Is the integration the same way as chicks to Hens? We have 9 chicks between 4-5 weeks old.
Just seeing if...
We have 9 chicks about 2-3 weeks old and we lost power. They are right now huddling together. It’s about 70 degrees inside. Will they be okay for a couple of hours or do I need to firenup the generator
We are looking at our ‘forever’ coop for our girls. Many of the real nice coops are made out of cedar. The only location where we can put the coop is in this wooded area, it rains a ton and the area does not see too much sunlight, so it’s constantly wet/mushy (the ground).
Our girls will be...
Hello there,
We have our chicks in a brooder and pretty secure against our Giant Loaf of a Lab. We've sat by the brooder and handled the chicks or just watched the chicks..and at times he will come over and sniff them, but then just get bored.
Is there any advantage of having him exposed to...
For the first 1-2 weeks, we pretty much locked our ladies in the coop/run. Then for another week or so, we only allowed them out of the Coop/Run about an hour before dusk. When were confident that they knew where home was. We free ranged them full time.
Morning everyone,
This might be me being a little paranoid. Anyways we moved the ladies from a large tupperware bin to a much roomier space. The smaller space the girls were doing their flapping wings and running around and they would kind of 'face off against' each other. We thought moving...
Usually when all of their feathers are in..by week 6 or 7? Also, I let them have a trial period, where I let them out of the run/coop for an hour before dusk, just so they know where home is every night.
Just wondering what age everyone suggesting that you can give bugs/insects to? Our girls are about 2 weeks old. Also any really popular bugs with chickens? I know there are some 'don'ts' (like flies etc)
I’ve tried to do as much research as possible with these breeds, I didn’t see any trouble spots, but checking in with more experienced chicken owners. These are our nine:
2 x Light Brahmas
2 x Bernevelders
2 x Speckled Sussex
1 x Plymouth Barred Rock
1 x silver laced Wyandotte
1 x Olive Egger
Thanks everyone, it went well. They were actually only 6 days apart, so while there was a noticeable size difference between our biggest and smallest (Brahma and Wyandotte). The Wyandotte was pretty assertive immediately.
everyone is getting along fabulously.
my guess is the Wyandotte will...
I know it’s advised that when you bring new birds into the flock, you are supposed to do it gradually (for example putting them at night while roost).
But what 2-3 day old chicks with 1-2 week old chicks, any fear there?
Good morning, I've noticed in the spring that my free range hens have essentially stopped eating their pellets, is it because they are getting enough to eat by foraging? Will they be missing anything from their diets because they don't eat pellets?
