Cause of 9 week old small cornish cross

This year was different, for some reason. I am thinking weather but we have 9 week old birds that are not worth processing. Took 1/2 a batch in and all were around 5lbs which I feel is REALLY small for 9 weeks, especially the cornish cross. We did feed non GMO feed and I thought maybe it was the...

Chicken was stuck on electric fence

We have broilers and with an electric fence and one of our chickens got "stuck" in the electric netting for, who knows, how long. Now she is VERY lethargic and almost dead. Has anyone had this happen before?

    Transitioning feed

When did you go from starter to grower with meat birds (what age)? Also, did you do a finisher the last few weeks or just stick with the grower?

    Pasture issues

I am wondering if these cornish x's will ever see pasture! The weather is horrible here. Anyone else have this problem? I live in Michigan and the chickens are 2 1/2 weeks old and some are quite bald. No way they can endure this weather. Not to mention there is no grass anyways. Bummer of a year...

    Feeding routine

ing Right now they seem to eat day and night as they are little. Will they also eat at night when older? I ask because I'd like to have them eat forage during the day and then provide them their bulk grain at night. Determined to keep them a bit more active to prevent problems. We are not doing...

    Chicks not eating fermented feed

Do I need to give them time? They want nothing to do with it. Right now I just fermented their commercial grain. They are only a week old so I wasn't sure I could add much more to it. Thoughts?

what pan or bowl to use for chicks with fermented feed?

I am making my first batch of fermented feed and wondered how to feed it to the chicks without making a HUGE mess. Once we have the food in the coop area we are going to use gutters. Should I just use bowls for now that take up less space?

will a narrow run deter flying predators?

We would like to do broilers in our horse pasture (we have 23 acres of horse pasture that we would like to add manure and compost to). WE'D like to kill 2 birds with 1 stone but prefer that the flying predators don't. I read that a narrow run will deter hawks, owls, etc, etc. Does anyone have...

    My Isa Reds are pecking

It's bad this winter but they have 6 sq ft per bird in the coop and over 14 in the run. They are cooped up a lot due to the cold and huge amounts of snow. I've tried everything but we did have to cull one 2 days ago. She was pecked so badly. ANyways, I have found that ALL of my Isa's are the...

Problems breathing but not sure why

I have a hen that isn't doing well. She has labored breathing, sneezing, and loose poop. No other chickens have anything. She is pretty lethargic and I found her hanging out in the run while everyone else was ranging. Her croup doesn't feel big but this is my first experience with a sick hen and...

A lot of "food" for thought and questions....

We were thinking of incorporating Salatin's methods in our horse pasture but I just think our scale would be too small to make in influence on the pasture. We have 25 acres of pasture and 8 horses, getting a couple mini cows this spring. We rotate in half. Anyways, thinking about freedom rangers...

Frostbite on comb - now bleeding

My rooster and hen have some frostbite on their combs that are now bleeding. Is the bleeding just a natural course of it falling off/healing (was black prior) or is this something more like them pecking? I am going to add heat tonight. Some of this weather surprised us and it was suddenly cold...

    Cleaning run in cold/snowy climates

How do you clean your run in the winter? We are trying to rake it but it's hard in the snow and frozen conditions. Any tips?

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Rooster

Would prefer not to ship. Looking for local sales only and did post on Craigslist. Have a Golden Laced Wyandotte Rooster and kids. Really don't want to sell the kids ;) so the rooster must go. He was born June 25th and is great with his hens. He did chase my son and that's the only shot he...

My rooster attacked my son today

This was a rooster that we did not raise as a pet and I always was dominate over him. He's increasingly more cocky and younger. Anyways, we have decided to not keep him. I just don't think rooster's and kids mix. The only thing my 4 year old did was play with his bike around the rooster. I...

    Rooster just started mating

I have 10 hens and only 1 is laying. "Roo" just started mating with all of the girls (or as many as he can), does that meant he hens are now sexually mature and ready to make some eggs? They are 22 weeks now. Also, it seems more of a fight for him to mate (he's sneaking up on them). I see no...

    electric fence question

I have this figured out with our horses, however, not sure about the chicken run. Want to make it electric but a lot of the fence is buried in the ground. How can I electrify it? Do you just charge it? I am wondering if it will end up charging the water in the run which is a metal tank.

neck only, who is the killer (picture added)

Picture added at bottom - graphic. Broad daylight too and right next to the run. We have had our barn cats kill 2 weasels in the past few months. Could it be the cats or a weasel? The hen was found under a really think bramble rose bush with just the neck chewed on. I found the rooster and 3...

    Rooster started crowing

This morning we got our first crow! So exciting but I also have some reservations and a question. Thus far he has been good with us and I expect the behavior to change some. My concern is not for me but for my kids. Should I get rid of him or just see how it goes? I only have experience with the...
