2 weeks ago a coon got into my coop and killed 3 of my 5 hens. 1 of the remaininh hens, a BO, was injured but is doing fine now. Neither of the remaing hens has laid since that night. Any idea how long it might be before they start to lay again? Just as a side note...We have trapped and killed 3...

silkie hen seeks other silkies in Central Pa.

Not sure where this should be posted so I guess I'll try here... I was given a lovely little silkie hen but 2 of my older hens just will not accept her. I would like to place her with other silkies NOT with other big hens who will treat her badly. If anyone has silkies they think will accept her...

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac if you preserve an egg that's laid on Good Friday it will protect your flock all year....I wonder how you are supposed to preserve it?

    History of the Apron

I just got this from a friend. Knowing how many of us here actually WEAR an apron I thought this was a good place to post this... The History Of Aprons I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only...

I had just finished cleaning the run and went inside the coop to clean up in there and put in some new shavings, etc. and was trying to just keep the door closed enough so the wind didn't really come blowing in and next think I know....THUNK! Need Peanutbutter Fudge Recipe

First off I will say that I do not consider melted candy to be fudge! If you like it that's great but it's not what I am looking for. Fudge is some combination of sugar, milk, butter, vanilla, cocoa (?) , peanutbutter and MAYBE marshamallow and it is boiled till it forms a soft ball...

    Pickled & Tickled

Some days it doesn't take much to make me happy... today I made pickled eggs & beets with my own eggs and beets that I canned from my garden. I am thrilled! This is the first year I grew beets...I have no idea why I never did them before. I pickled them when I canned them and then added some...

Do your friends help feed your chickens?

I went out to breakfast this morning with 6 friends. When we were done eating one of them asked the waitress for a large to go box. When it came everyone loaded all their leftovers into it for the chickens. It cracked me up. they all love "the girls". Of course they all get a few eggs now and...

    moving their food and water...

My chicks are fenced and have access to their coop all the time. They have always had food and water both inside and outside their coop. I had their outside feeder and waterer hanging but since we put up the motion light the slightest breeze activates it all the time. I sat them down on concrete...

The chooks and I are eating great today!

I stopped by a little local surplus outlet type store today. They are always giving away free stuff with a purchase. Usually it's some kind of produce that is at or past it's "good by" date. Last week it was pumpkins and the bagged Dole salads. Well today it was large containers of USDA organic...
