Need advice! My son accidentally opened incubator and we have 5 pips!

Thanks, Donrae! Is there a way to tell if they are shrink wrapped without opening up the bator? We have a Brinsea mini advance so we have pretty good visibility.

Need advice! My son accidentally opened incubator and we have 5 pips!

My 6 year old has been so excited about the eggs hatching. Tonight he was looking at the eggs in the incubator and accidentally knocked the top off a little. It wasn't completely off but it took a few minutes before we noticed and put the lid back on. My concern is that we have 5 external pips...

Rooster attacked by dog :( Updated with pictures of his injuries

Frank is doing very well! Thank you for asking! He is currently dealing with some lice (poor guy can't catch a break) but over all he's a happy healthy rooster that made a full recovery. His feathers are growing back in pretty well too. The few bare spots of missing feathers are the only way...

    Is this an egg?

Thank you sooooo much for your reply! I think that's exactly what my hen laid. I never would have found this info on my own. Thank you!

    Is this an egg?

We've been really frustrated with our egg situation lately. We have 3 older hens (about 2 1/2 years old) that have been laying just about every day since spring. It's been awesome. Then all of a sudden 2 of the 3 have stopped laying. It's been about a week with no eggs from them. We also have 7...

    Worst. Hatch. Ever.

Yes. I was shooting for 55-65 for lockdown humidity. It never went below 25 prior to lockdown.

    Worst. Hatch. Ever.

Thank you for your thoughts! The link was awesome and very helpful. I will have to try a higher humidity next time. Hopefully that will help!

    Worst. Hatch. Ever.

In March I hatched eggs for the first time. It went really well up until lockdown. Then I made a rookie mistake and opened the incubator and ended up loosing about half of my eggs there at the end. I was really disappointed so I started collecting eggs again to have another attempt. That's where...

Wattle color at 3 weeks old

Hi! I have a quick question! I hatched out some chicks on 4/1 so they're about 3 weeks old. A couple of the chicks wattles are already turning pink. Would it be safe to assume that these chicks are boys or is it too early to say? Their combs are also larger than the other's combs but are not yet...

Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

One hatched! It didn't fully absorb the yolk though. There was a tiny bit of yellow sticking out from its navel so I put it in a little bowl with a wet paper towel. Hopefully it will finish up with no issues. I also have a total of 4 more pipped. Today should be fun! I'm hoping that at least...

Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

It's day 19 for me and I have 2 pips and one rocking away! Lots of chirping also. I noticed one pip at 4:30 pm and it hasn't made any progress since then. Hopefully it's just resting. I'm so anxious for these babies to hatch!

Yay! Congrats! Good luck with the others!

Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

I candled today! Apparently I can't count (or maybe its chicken math at its best haha). Instead of 29, I had 30 in the incubator. 15 were shipped eggs, 15 my own backyard mixes. Of the shipped eggs, 6 were clear (looks like 3 were infertile and the other 3 stopped around day 2). 3 of the other...

Photo share: recently hatched "backyard special" mixes

This is a great thread! I've got an incubator full of "backyard mixes" and I can't wait to see what they look like! Your little chicks are adorable!!!

I agree! This helped my boys as well.

Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

I try to keep mine between 25% and 40%. Mine definitely fluctuates so hopefully that's ok? I only add water when it gets below 25%.

Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

Hi! Wanted to update on my hatch so far! I've got a total of 29 eggs in the incubator. They were all set in the morning on 3/13. I VERY carefully candled a couple last night and saw veins and embryos! Yay! I won't do an official candling until this Thursday (I don't want to risk hurting all the...

    Meat birds and children

My boys are 7, 5, 3 & 1. I was really nervous about how they would handle raising meat birds. Before we got them I explained why we were growing birds for meat and that these birds were not pets. Although we did nick name all of them "Chicken Nugget." My kids were fine when it came time for...

    Egg carton question

I had not heard that about the lower temp at hatch. Thank you! I am doing the dry method as well. I saw that it can help get the air cells to stay in the correct position. I think that future hatches will be less stressful than this one is for me. This is my first one so everything is new and...
