Building a replacement tractor coop. The first one lasted 7 years and I'm hoping to get 10+ out of this one
Here's the initial wall frames in front of the old coop. The new coop measures 4' x 4' x 8' plus 16" center height for the roof pitch.
Pre-painting all of the parts before...
Had a little fun with some eggs today. Tried the '300-minute' recipe, put on the rack in oven set to 210 degrees for 5 hours and below are photos of the results. From the oven I put them into a bowl of cool water and then peeled them a few minutes later (very easy to peel). The air pocket is...
There are always lots of great topics about people's coops when they are new, but I'd like to start one about how things are going several years later... after the 'honeymoon' has ended.
Here's my banty tractor/coop when it was completed in July, 2008. The bottom area measures 4' x 7' x 2'...
This egg was laid a couple of days ago, I've got one hen who does this pretty frequently:
In the video I mention that this egg is 'edible' however I need to mention that an egg like this is VERY POROUS and moisture, bacteria, nano-robots, etc. can easily get into the egg and make you sick...
We put some Marans eggs under our broody frizzle and she hatched out three of them. Two are white, the third has a yellow tinge. Any chance Marans are sex-linked? I believe they are Black Marans.
One of my hens (I have three) went broody for the umpteenth time about two weeks ago. Since I don't have a rooster, I decided to go on Craigslist and find some fertile eggs for her to set on. Now two weeks later ALL THREE of my hens are broody and squeezing into the nesting box all trying to...
Years ago, our city used to collect separated recyclables but later moved to comingled recycling. Nowadays, we're supposed to use these old containers for glass, but filled mine with dirt and am still using it for "cans"...
So, should I recycle these "cans"?
One of these eggs is from my hens, the other is store-bought. Can you tell which is which? (Please pardon the broken yolk in the lower one, I'm still a little rough with eggs sometimes. )
Am I right in assuming that a frizzle chicken's wacky feathers would provide less protection from cold because they can't trap air the same way regular feathers can?
Back on July 1st, I said:

Well, bright and early this morning it happened. He started crowing his head off. It was kind of a surprise as I'd heard others say that their roosters sounded pretty 'pathetic' on their first crowing attempts. Nope, not our roo - he was just a-crowing up a...
I have four chickens, about 14 weeks old, and every night they all gather into a chicken pile in the corner of the coop to sleep. There's a roosting board in their coop, but they just ignore it.
Three nights ago, I picked each one up and set them on the roost. Last night, I again picked them...
After about a month of weekends, it's not 100% yet, but it's looking pretty good. It doesn't have a name yet, but I'm starting to like "Chick Inn". It was built with 3-4 bantams in mind, the run measures 6' x 4' x 2', the coop is 2' x 4' x 2' (plus an extra 5cu ft in the 'rafters').
The top...
I just got myself four Easter Eggers who are about 10-11 weeks old.
Question is, which gender is this one?
(Three pics are all of same chicken):
Recognizably larger than the others and seems to have a lot of behaviors that lead me to think it's a rooster.
Thoughts?
