    Buckeye Breed Thread

Hi everyone, I acquired 2 buckeye hens 3 days ago. When I got them home I realized they were obviously inbred and culled bc of their attributes, one hen has 5 toes! They both have extremely bad knuckles on their toes but the one that does not have 5 toes has knuckles that curve so badly it makes...

How long do my eggs keep (out of the fridge)?

Hi, I keep seeing and reading about this idea of keeping egg baskets full of eggs on display in your kitchen, but I can't find any info about how long they last! Reason: I came up with the idea to make a beaded wire egg basket with my daughter to collect and display our eggs in (you know, the...

    Chantecler vs Buckeye

I'm also interested in a good informational response here. I like both breeds also, but I'm just a back yard keeper for fun so I don't really have space or desire to keep every single breed I'm interested in!

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Yeah, people sell black copper marans eggs for $4/dozen here, just for eating. People love their eggs. I actually (call me crazy) have a different opinion on their egg color, --I've never seen one in person (just online pics) so it's possible I might change my mind-- but the welsummer's egg is...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi everybody! I just placed an order for these beautiful wheaten/blue wheaten chicks, but they won't be available for "a couple months" still... I want them so badly right now! So, I need some conversation going on with them right now... The hubbs just doesn't get it! Anyone out there, old pros...

RSL rooster for processing, so skinny

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised on how much meat he did have on him, I was envisioning nothing, but his breast meat was quite substantial! I'm cooking him up tomorrow in the crock pot, he better be good! He was a mean thing, I bet he's got a hidden bone just especially for me to choke on...

RSL rooster for processing, so skinny

i know this is a difficult one to answer bc of the different breeds you can use to produce a sex link, and i don't know his heritage, but i have this rsl rooster i want to butcher, he was born in the spring so he's like 8 mos old or so. he's so big he can jump out of the pen so he comes and goes...

    What on earth is this!?

Lol, a "shelled fart egg" is that really what they're called? How does it happen? It was laying right under their roost this morning...!

    What on earth is this!?

The world's tiniest, soft-shelled chicken egg! There's even a yolk inside! Maybe one of my babie's first eggs? I still have two chickens that haven't started laying yet...

Black colored leg scales on one welsummer, black toenails on all of them?

Can anyone tell me if this is ok or if they have a fungus or something?

Black colored leg scales on one welsummer, black toenails on all of them?

I've noticed that my welsummers' toenails are all a pale black color (lol), not like midnight "dead" black, but just black. There's a pic attached. Also one of them has bock tipped scales over her foot and up to her ankle. Picture also attached. Is this ok, or is something going on with them...

Hen limping, no sign of trauma to the leg anywhere

Yeah I've seen those really gross pictures, trying to prevent it before it gets to that level! It looks so nasty! Two of my silkie's legs look that way, but you can't tell unless their leg feathers are wet and sticking together, but that's why I'm treating everyone, so I don't have to see it...

Hen limping, no sign of trauma to the leg anywhere

Oh she is fine I went in for a regular appointment and her heart rate made her look stressed so we monitored her for 24 hours in the hospital and she's fine. Thanks for your concern though! Anyways my hen is not limping this morning, she must have just strained it yesterday trying to get out...

Hen limping, no sign of trauma to the leg anywhere

One of my barred rock hens is limping, I left them in their caged in area yesterday and today bc I had to do an overnight stay in the hospital to monitor my baby's funny heart beat... Anyways I noticed it today when i got home and let them out, so i caught her and there are no thorns in her...

Really gross-looking white colored legs on some of my silkies?

No I did not check the others, they free range and they're really difficult to catch, by the time they're roosting it's dark, But i went ahead and bought some high-yield garden pet and livestock dust, dusted the whole coop and the chickens too, and all their favorite dust-bath spots, I also gave...

Really gross-looking white colored legs on some of my silkies?

No the scales don't appear to be raised, the legs just look white and swollen and somewhat wrinkly... And just all around disgusting really

Really gross-looking white colored legs on some of my silkies?

I have this silkie, and the rooster looks like he has it too, and one other silkie may also have this. I've never noticed it before but it's kinda wet today so everyone's leg feathers are sticking together. I don't know of they've always had this or not: Does anyone know what it is...
