Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My kids have it backwards! My son is the one who chose to raise the large fowl. He says it takes too many bantam eggs to make a decent omelet! My girls both chose to raise bantams. They just love them for the cuteness factor. I'm with you Jerry... eggs are eggs. Needing less pen space and...

Setting eggs today, 6-30-12...anyone else want to join in the fun???

I'm so sorry to hear about your bad luck with the eggs. I don't know what could have gone wrong... you said the chicken eggs were duds. Do you mean not fertile? That can happen with young birds whan they first get going and if I remember right these were some first eggs from your pullets. I...

Congratulations on your Babies!!! They are sooooo cute!!! Mine are all solid blackish/brown... I love the markings on yours!!! I can never sleep either when someone is hatching or there are new babies. I guess it's the mom in me. I just have to keep checking to see how they are doing...

    could refrigitaded eggs hatch

So the fact that cryopreservation is done successfully all the time isn't proof enough for you? But, for the original poster, why don't you try some? Many said refridgerated eggs wouldn't hatch, but they do. I imagine frozen eggs could hatch too, however the difficult part would probably be...

Co-parenting... will I get them to hatch! *Assisted hatch success & pictures!!!*

HOORAY!!!! A DUCKIE!!! Good job!!! How's the other little one? I wouldn't worry about what anyone says that hasn't hatched muscovy before! I read everything I could find online prior to hatching mine, and everything I found said they have a lot of late deaths in the shell. So its not...

Co-parenting... will I get them to hatch! *Assisted hatch success & pictures!!!*

I completely agree with your feelings about assisted hatches. I am the same way when hatching my chicks. But, the more I read about muscovies, the more I realized that traditional artificial incubation doesn't work as well for them. As I read more from many sources, the one thing I saw...

Co-parenting... will I get them to hatch! *Assisted hatch success & pictures!!!*

Welcome back! I really wish someone who knows more than I do would jump on here and advise you! Please remember I've done only 1 muscovy hatch... so factor that in as you read my thoughts. Like I said above, my 3 that externally pipped all eventually needed assistance. Even though I kept...

Wow... it's hard to believe you are almost at lockdown again! I've been super busy, so time is just flying by. Did you candle yet? If so, how'd they look? I am keeping my fingers crossed that you have a good hatch! As far as your chick being a he or she... its hard to say when you'll...

calling on the experts on HUMDITY

Hard breathing for a brief time can be just from the exertion from hatching, but if it continues the chick is either too warm or needs more air. It is safe to lower temp a degree or so. Also, check how your vents are set! Once I have chicks out of the shell I like my vent open! I once read...

calling on the experts on HUMDITY

Well... you will get different answers on this one. I count the first day as day 1, but I consider it to not be done until the full 24 hours is up. That way I will finish day 21 exactly 3 weeks after I set the eggs. Hmm... that is confusing. So you are already over 19% weight loss? That...

No humming incubators and this list has gotten quiet too. I know we still have some with eggs incubating. gvolkert... when are your next eggs due? In the jungle... I know you have several due dates... are we getting close to the first one? Anyone else? WyoChickenMamma... a wedding...

calling on the experts on HUMDITY

Yes... the carton method should work fine in your Brinsea. It will keep the eggs from being rolled around. Your chick that had the yolk sac not fully absorbed was probably caused by slightly high temps or even the unstable temps caused by your power outage. You say your temps are 99.4 - 99.6...

Please help Smudgie!!! Calling all experts!!!

Smudgie is doing great! I have successfully weaned her off of the tube feeding. She had only 1 tube feeding yesterday morning and none today! Even though she had been picking at the feed she really didn't consume enough at first, which had me concerned about decreasing the tube feeding...

calling on the experts on HUMDITY

Many people use the egg carton method for hatching. My hatch rates improved when I switched from laying on their sides to hatching upright in a carton. Here's a photo that I took of a chick, but on the side you can see what my cut down cartons look like. You can see that the carton is cut...

    Day 21 Help I Have A Question !

Sounds normal to me. Were the veins you saw red? If they were red it's a good sign. Your eggs probably just need a little more time.

I'm glad they all are looking good! You will know the internal pip when you see it. Since mine were my first duck eggs, I wasn't sure if it would be easy to see. but as soon as I candled an egg that had internally pipped it was quite clear what I was looking at! I could see the little beak...
