Has this girl lost her stinkin' mind?

Oh my gosh. I could choke her. She is the SMALLEST adult chicken I have, and I mean tiny. She's got sort of a silky head and a partridge cochin body and coloring - feathered feet. Anyway, she has been sitting and sitting on eggs for weeks. I keep taking them away, but was letting her sit on 1...

    Breeding question

Okay, so I haven't thought about this because I never raised babies...but now I am. I have 1 rooster and 7 hens - 7 babies from the rooster/hens. When the babies grow up, isn't the rooster going to "do it" with the hens who are his babies? What do other people do? Separate them or...you...

Need help determining if it's alive.

Internally pipped last night and was really chirping loud, today nothing. I found the air sac and I pipped for it just now and nothing happened. I can see it in there, but there is no movement. Would it be normal for a person to pip it, and have the chick not make any sound or movements?

How do I know if the chick died

So far I've hatched out 7 chicks. There is one egg, that is a bantam egg, the others that were the same size hatched 4-5 days ago. I don't see any movement - but I dont know? It could have been layed later than the other eggs - I took these out from my broody hen after a chick hatched and it...

New baby is here and more are coming!!!!

Oh. My. God. Hatching chicks is sooo amazing. I have some eggs of mass confusion in the incubator(s) no idea when anything is supposed to hatch as I pulled most out of the nests after one baby died that hatched outside. So, I've been waiting, patiently. Candling, watching video after video...

I may have messed this all up :(

I have two broody hens - one is a Miss Penelope, a black cochin and sitting on big eggs that I don't think she is effectively incubating....but Miss Julie - she's got the good clutch. I didn't begin with the intention of hatching eggs. One day turned into two, two into three of her sitting on...

Two of my girls are broody

One I have let sit on eggs for about 10 days now. I could tell for sure two of them have babies in them. I'm looking for veins, right? Should I take the other eggs out of the nest that don't seem fertile - and, if I wanted to order some baby chicks when would be the best time to do that to...

Hawks having a feast (graphic photos)

Ahhh these stupid hawks I thought left for good - but they came back with a vengence. Literally - one was on top of my coop, and one went IN my coop. I had to leave the door open just enough for the turkey's to go in should the hawk come (since it killed 1 chicken in the open side of my coop...

    My rooster is crippled?

He wasn't feeling so great yesterday - and today I went out to find him sunning under the rabbit cage when I picked him up his left foot was curled under him. I brought him into the house, and I think it's both feet that are curled. I sat him on my bed and he never moved. His wings are...

    Darn Red Tailed Hawks!!!!

There are three hawks that have taken to just living around my chickens it seems. I have lost 3 hens in 1.5 months - my most favorite barred rock hen today. How is it they seem to just pick my favorites?? I put out a hawk decoy I got at TSC company, but I think it's a coopers hawk intended to...

How to get him used to me

It's been a little over a month since I got an abandoned auction turkey which I knew nothing at all about other than he was not getting along well with the other tom who was in the cardboard box taped up with him. So I currently have 12 hens and 2 roosters and 1 tom turkey. I am concerned...

What kind of turkey is this?

Can anyone tell me? Additionally is there any way to tell how old a turkey might be? This turkey is a rescue who was left taped up in a box for a couple days with another tom. At the new rescuers house, the toms were not getting along, so I took one off her hands - but she, like me, knows...

    Buttermilk Oatmeal

The BIGGEST HIT in all my 4 months of owning chickens. Not one of them could get enough. The picked every last speck. I really think they like "warm" food. Weird?

I thought this would be easy - but it's not!

I started just irresponsibly and quickly fell in love with these awesome little creatures. I had 12 hens and 2 roos. I am down to 9 hens and two roos. Two hens were the victim of hawks and one died within 3 days of noticing something was wrong with her. Now - I notice another hen is...

How much of the D10 do I put

I'm just not mathematical, and my husband wont help me figure it out. I have NO idea how much of this D-10 to put in one gallon of water. Since it has to be made fresh every day, I just want to do a gallon or even half a gallon. But I can't figure out how much to put in. Anyone know?

Should I give them ALL a bath?

I have 14 in my flock. When I got the original 4 they had some red mites on them. I dusted them and thought they went away. Then, got more chickens. Today when I picked up one of my little ones and was scratching around on him and lifting his feathers, I saw those little suckers running...

Updated photos to see what is what =)

So here are some of my babies that I bought 2 months ago. Here's what I'm trying to figure out. The barred rock, I'm pretty sure is a rooster. However, he's also growing really fast, or my other birds are growing really slow. He's two weeks younger than the black and white one are, yet has...

    Hen still wont eat

Since I found her two days ago, unable to extend her leg without pain she has only sat in the box and hasn't moved at all. She's breathing a little heavy, but may be just because it's hot out. I can get her to drink water if I push her beak into it. She did peck at some yogurt this morning...

Ugh! Diagnosing these girls is hard! I found a pocket of air...

Cliff notes... Chicken didn't come home last night, found her this morning in the field sitting still. She could not walk. I put her in the corner of coop gave some d-10 in water. She perked up a bit. Went back out tonight and her body is a bluish green color, and her but end bright pink. I...

    Definitely bumblefoot - now what?

So I found the spot on the bottom of her foot which needs to come off I guess so the infection should come out. After reading the board, I plan to get epsom salt and soak the foot. After I soak it, if the hard spot on the bottom of the foot is soft - can I just kind of pick it out and then...
