Help me figure out what predator is getting my birds!

So far I have lost one Buff Orpington hen and one Cayuga duck. The birds still had their heads intact but their bellies were ripped open and their guts taken out and eaten. It has happened at dusk both times, 2 days apart. It leaves all of my other birds alone. My flock is scared to leave their...

Feeling very discouraged with my first broody hatch!

Well, it's day 21 and so far I had a chick hatch prematurely and didn't absorb its yolk. Then mama kicked an egg out that was partially hatched that was facing the wrong way and hadn't absorbed its yolk either. On day 17 an egg got crushed so the chick died obviously. It looks like the last 4...

What day of development? *WARNING-GRAPHIC PICS*

I checked on my broody hen and she had a broken egg under her with a semi developed chick. As far as my records go, I believe she is on day 16 of development. The chick is very well developed with feathers and toe nails so I think she is farther along. There was a decent amount of blood and a...

Broody was scared off her nest! How long is too long?

My broody sitting on 14 eggs was scared off her nest yesterday by a sneaky Blue Andalusian hen that flew over the fence, found the small pop door into broody ' s coop, flew over the partition, and harassed broody girl in her kennel. I found her huddled down outside of the coop. Once I brought...

    Broody Behavior- normal or not?

So I have a BCM hen that went broody. I couldn't break her after a week so I decided to get her some hatching eggs. I set her up in a vacant coop with a large nest box full of shavings, feathers, and a plastic nest pad. I put the eggs in her nest and I put her in there and she became extremely...

When is it too late to give a broody eggs?

One of my BCM hens went broody about a week ago and I keep taking eggs from her since I don't have a rooster. If I were to give her some fertilized eggs on Monday, do you think she would sit on them until they hatched? Or is it too late? Thanks in advance!

    Foaming in the eyes?

It is extremely bitter here in MN today and I went outside to do chores and noticed one of my Buff Orpingtons had what looked like white foam on her eyes. She's behaving normally and can move her eyes. What is this?

    Hens tearing nails...what's the issue?

So far today, two of my 3 year old hens have torn off a decent chunk of one of their nails. Ofcourse they bled perfusely but I got the bleeding to stop. Im not sure why this is happening. I trim their nails as needed so they arent too long. It did drop to -20 (without windchill) here today...

Worming during molt- is it safe?

So some of the girls have worms. I don't want this to become a bigger problem and I have the medication to worm them now but........they are molting. Some of the older girls just got done molting, a few others are just starting and the rest are right in the middle of it. Would it be too...

Made some changes this time around- want to share success!

So this was our 4th time doing a large batch of meat birds for profit. I know it can be hard for newbies to decide what products to use. I had to do a lot of research to figure out what would work for our family and I finally have it down to a science. And no, I don't work for any of these...

CX Meat Birds coughing and wheezing? What's wrong/Can we still eat?!

I have a group of CX meat birds that are supposed to be butchered on Saturday. Tuesday they started making weird sounds but I didn't think anything of it. I thought they were just getting their "big chicken clucks" and growing out of their cheeps. Now they are coughing and I lost two that...

    My Speckled Sussex hen CROWING?!

Mitzie is about a year and a half old. I went out to the coop this morning and heard a rather strange noise from one of my hens. I looked over at her and she looked like she was trying to crow. Here is a video of what I'm trying to describe.... Sorry for the poor quality, it's a cellphone...

    MN Poultry Shows 2013/2014?

Hello all! I am very new to show quality poultry from a breeder- all of my previous birds have come from Welp and McMurray. I was interested in attending a show sometime soon to check things out and see if I would like to enter the show ring. I have absolutely no idea where to start as far as...

I was chosen for a breeding project!

I signed up about a year ago to join a Black Copper Maran breeding project. Tonight I got an email stating I was chosen and my birds are ready! These will be my first birds from a breeder instead of a hatchery. I have waited 3 long years to own a BCM and I could not be happier. Any advice...

Salmon Faverolles, Dark Brahmas, Cream Legbars

I am looking to add some pet quality stock from a decent breeder to my existing flock of hens. I want to purchase pullets sometime in October or next spring from someone in Minnesota, preferrably in the central area that has decent stock. Let me know if you have any for sale! Thank you!

    First egg?

So my ducks are 16 weeks old. They are Cayugas and Golden Hybrids. Today I found a small tan colored waxy egg in the coop amongst a bunch of chicken eggs. The ducks and chickens are intermixed in the same coop and run. Could it be a duck egg?

    Waxy coating over egg?

While out in the coop today I found this smaller egg that had a cream colored wax coating on the outside. I have never seen anything like this before. Any ideas?

How to confront friend with diseased hens? Help!

I went to visit a friend of mine today who has a flock of mostly bantams, a few standard egg layers, and two roosters. She got the original 3 bantam hens and 1 standard rooster about a year and a half ago and they were beautiful when she got them. Then her broodies hatched a few chicks and they...

    Bantam rooster with standard hens?

So I went to pick up some new pullets the other day. They had an adorable, friendly, and surprisingly quiet bantam Easter Egger rooster that I fell in love with. I want to cross him with my Welsummer girls, but I'm afraid that he won't be able to "do his duties" hehe. What are the possibilities...
