    Mixing my Flock - Tips?

Thanks everyone for the great tips! We are going to try and get into a bigger place hopefully in the spring so we'll have a bigger area for them. For now we are letting them free range a lot and will pray they stay happy. :) Thanks again for the info!

    Mixing my Flock - Tips?

The 4 smaller ones were free from a friend (just some chicks she hatched for the experience for her kids). The 3 pullets I bought were pretty cheap as well. If I lose them all we'll be sad but I'll be out less than $30. I talked to a few friends who have mixed flocks with no issues so I didn't...

    Mixing my Flock - Tips?

I have four 5 week old pullets (Mixed Black Australorp and RIRs) and will be adding three 14 week pullets (Ameraucana) today. Any tips? Are they young enough that they can all be put together immediately or should I separate them first? We have a pretty small coop/henhouse (3'x4') with attached...

    HELP Chick with broken leg!

He was going to live at a new home today so I may let the new owner decide what she wants to do with him. Can't have roosters in the city so if she doesn't want him I may have to put him down. Since I'm so new to this I still feel like they are my babies..

    HELP Chick with broken leg!

So we just let the chicks out in the run today for the first time. We checked on them a while later and one of the chicks has a broken leg. I don't know if he fell from the coop or if he got caught in the chicken wire. It was bleeding some but has stopped. He is walking around fine and eating...

EE and Rhode Island Reds. Gender??

Your EE/RIR looks SOOO similar to mine. Hoping they are pullets! :) Does yours act like the "big man on campus" like mine does? Don't know if its a breed trait or what... Your RIR 1 looks very "pulletish" to me. The RIR 2 looks more cockerel to me but mine have bigger combs than yours do so...

    Cold Winter in TX Help...

Should I switch to a red one? I'm afraid they may be getting over-stimulated with the white one. Or maybe they are fine...

    Cold Winter in TX Help...

I have 1 month old chicks (4 to 4 1/2 weeks old) outside in an empty coop. I have put a heat lamp in the coop the last 2 nights because the lows are in the upper 20's. I've never seen them huddling under the lamp when I check on them. Should I switch to a regular light-bulb? I don't want to get...

    Black Australorp Gender Help

I have 3 RIR/Australorp 1 month old chicks. They all feathered in very evenly with the exception of a 4th one which is still missing its shoulder feathers and has a much more prominent comb (couldn't get a picture of that little guy). Wondering what the gender is one the three "triplets"...

Rhode Island Red/Australorp Cross. Gender? New Pics!

New Pics: Any guesses on gender? He/She is definitely my favorite so I REALLY hope pullet. But either way I'll probably keep it ;)

EE and Rhode Island Reds. Gender??

New Pics: First two is the EasterEgger/RIR Mix: Pure RIR that I'm assuming is a Roo based on the advice of you guy (I have 3 that are all VERY similar and look just like this one): Comparison between the EE/RIR cross and the RIR: Still probably too soon to guess gender but I'm...

EE and Rhode Island Reds. Gender??

That helps a lot! I realized what I thought were the "saddle feathers" were really tail feathers I was talking about. I guess I'll just give it a few more weeks before trying to get rid of the cockerels. The one I now think is a hen and not roo sure acts like a "man" haha ;)

EE and Rhode Island Reds. Gender??

According to this website: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/sexingchicks.html it looks like my guesses may have been wrong! Looks like my "Roo" and Hen 2 *may* be hens and my Hen 1 and 3 are probably Roos. (based mainly on comb development and feather development) SOOO much to learn!

EE and Rhode Island Reds. Gender??

She said the one I think is a Cockerel hatched from a green egg (she hand hatched it) but its dad was a RIR. The others are probably RIRs (based on talking to the hatcher). I was just going based off the saddle feathers being so much shorter than the one I thought was cockerel. But like I said...

    New Member from Texas

Howdy! I'm Tiffany from Texas and I'm a newbie when it comes to chickens! I got 11 chicks from a friend and am hoping for at least 6 hens (I have to give away any roosters because of being in the city). They are about 4 weeks old now! I can use all the advice I can get! We are having a cold...
