    Sexlink Olive Egger question

I know that using a black rooster over a legbar hen will result in auto sexing at hatch. I currently have a BCM roo for my OE pen, but my back-up boy is a Wheaten Marans. Since the male Wheatens feather out black, does that still work for creating an auto-sexing offspring? Or NO because of...

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

Thanks for your help. :) Despite what appears to be great development and gorgeously thick veining and active movement, I'm worried my inexperience with shipped eggs has already set them up for failure. I didn't have them perfectly upright the first week -- they were angled. A couple of the...

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

Lol -- I read the article and just turned my turner on and now after your post I'm debating! I have candled by just holding my candler to the tops -- haven't wanted to risk picking them up. So -- hand turning?

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

So -- is is she turning AFTER day 7? I have had my shipped eggs in the incubator -- turner off. It's day 8 right now and I've been tempted to turn it on because I'm so nervous of chicks sticking to the shell. BUT -- I keep reading conflicting advice; another woman on a FB chicken group told...

Is it safe to call this 12 week old Polish a GIRL?

I added a closer photo of him (gah) standing in the very first post -- that's the best I can get because Chase NEVER stops moving.

Is it safe to call this 12 week old Polish a GIRL?

Well, boo! I was hoping the zero wattle/comb growth meant girl. Here are two of him standing:

Is it safe to call this 12 week old Polish a GIRL?

12 weeks on Friday. No crowing and zero wattle/comb growth or coloration (my other polishof the same age started growing his bright red wattles/comb weeks ago). I am wanting to lean toward pullet but some of the feathers are throwing me off. Opinions? (New Pic #1)

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hello! Joining in to pass time while waiting for my eggs to hatch; purchased a dozen Wheaten Ams from @pasofinofarm ; at day 7, I have 4 developing and the rest all appear clear (I have a good candeler that worked well last hatch with my OE and FBCM) but giving till day 10 before I pull those...

    Silkie thread!

About two years. This is totally my fault for not being more careful in selection (of both breeder and birds). If nothing else, my kids have some cute pets .... just sad they aren't showable too. Lesson learned.

    Silkie thread!

According to the breeder -- and which appears to be true based on what I saw of her pens and breeding set up (she gave me full tour when I went to purchase) -- her breeds are all separate and never together. She raises polish and silkies. She said -- in a response a few moments ago when I...

    Silkie thread!

Hey, all -- I purchased a few silkies from a breeder last month -- a frizzle and two smooth. One of the smooth ones has me confused! They are about 6-7 weeks old. Any idea why this silkie's feathers look like normal chicken feathers instead of fluffy like "regular" silkies? It is the only of...

    Is this Omphalitis?

Yes, I read all of those earlier in the day and "googled" too (that is how I knew to use the iodine and to keep her separate)-- mine doesn't have an open navel which is why I am confused. I was just hoping someone familiar wold be able to confirm. Sigh -- this is going to be sad. :(

    Is this Omphalitis?

So this was the last chick to hatch -- 24+ hours after she started zipping. I ended up assisting because she just stopped trying and I was concerned. She (d'Anvers bantam) came out weak and had a bit of shrink wrapping. And, she had a ton of green gunk at the bottom of her shell (and stuck to...

d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Question: do I need to grind Chick Starter crumbles a little for my d'Anvers chick? His mouth seems so little for the crumbles.

    March 13th 2016 Hatch-A-long

Ended up needing to assist the final two -- one is doing great aside from some curled toes (he is currently sporting homemade chick shoes). The other had a very rough time and I intervened at about the 26 hour mark -- I am afraid he has navel/yolk infection. I have him separate and am treating...

INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

Here is my little guy that Sally and several of you helped me assist .... he needed LOTS of TLC after, including a pair of his very own Chick Shoes to correct curled toes. I really wasn't sure he would make it but it turns out he is a very strong willed little guy. Since we are naming all...

    Hands on hatching and help

I checked and navel area is closed. She cries a lot and flops all over bator now. .... I believe her toes are curled up. Was waiting to make sure they won't straighten as she gets stronger but am guessing I need to make her some shoes

    Should I assist???????

I ended up making the decision to assist -- took the top part of shell, above air cell. There were absolutely no veins but the membrane had started to dry and the chick/egg did NOT smell good. Put her back in and upped the humidity. She ended up wiggling out but almost acted like she was in...
