I'm sure you all like a challenge.
These pictures may contain a black silkie hen and Rhode Island Red hen - I know what those are.
There are also 5 chicks 13 weeks old today, hatched by the silkie
The black one is half pure Ayam Cemani and half Blue Wheaten Ameraucana.
(both based on...
Thought I would share.
My 8 year old daughter and I have six year old hens, Black Star and Rhode Island Red.
Lately, a black star hen has been inhabiting the nest box. We pick the eggs out from under her and they are warm. Shey'll stay in there even if there is just the golf ball. I think...
Hi. I've been doing some more work on my chicken tractor as my hens approach laying age.
I got the rollout nest bottom and figured I would find a box that matched it.
I got close by ordering a large square bucket with lid around 12 x 16.
I trimmed the nest bottom a bit to fit...
I scrapped my previous idea and built this tractor out of scrapwood and metal roofing I scavenged from my neighbor.
I know the pictuer doesn't show much.
Key features:
Upper story for roosting area with hardware cloth flooring and wood supports about 15-18" high.
All terrain wheels for...
Hatches 120 quail eggs, or 48 chicken eggs. I have used it to hatch Coturnix Quail and california Valley Quail, and more recently for chickens. I did very well with the quail a few years back. I didn't do as well with the chickens do to some mistakes on my part.
Not planning on hatching...
I've built a PVC feeder into my chicken tractor.
It is a 4 inch drain pipe with a 45 degree elbow. It has about a one foot 45 degree loader and four foot horizontal section with holes for access for the chicken's heads.
Unfortunately, I scoop feed into the end and it collects there but...
I have 13 chicks outgrowing a brooder. They are about 8.5 weeks old.
I think most of them are pullets. Particularly the black sexlinked - I don't expect many mistakes there.
To my untrained eye, two of them are likely cocks. They have fatter combs than the others.
One is a Rhode Island...
I have three chicks hatched Monday morning, Tuesday noon, and Tuesday late afternoon. There are still 28 other eggs in the Brower incubator - I started with 48.
I know it is very very bad to open the incubator during hatch time.
However, one of the three chicks in there has been there since...
I started eggs three weeks ago Sunday night and Monday morning.
Last night, there were no signs of activity, no pips. I've been very uncertain of the hatch with the unpredictable temperatures in my incubator and possibly with my thermometers.
This morning, the incubator still looked...
I am not the seller, nor do I know them, but I am posting this so people can evaluate it, and in case someone in the PDX area wants to grab it up.

What does anyone know about this incubator?
I've gotten some eggs to hatch from JazziJ, a few streets away. He didn't know what breeds his chickens are but he sent me a picture of his flock. .
Who can guess the breeds in this picture? I'm a novice but I can guess that there are some barred rocks hens and a Rhode Island or New Hampshire...
I did the hygrometer check on my two of my hygrometers by using salt and water and a plastic bag.
http://exoticpets.about.com/od/herpresources/ss/hygrometer_6.htm
Given enough time:
My digital radio shack thermometer hygrometer reads 63.
My reptile cage analog hygrometer reads 50...
My last hatch was pretty much nonexistant.
Last month, I had trouble with a TH120 incubator holding temperature. On day 15 of incubation, temperature dropped to 92 and did not get any higher. The controls became completely unresponsive, and the light would not come on regardless of the...
I know this topic has come up before and some people have had success with
I may be willing to be an experiment for this topic because:
I'm having trouble finding local fertile eggs of known breed.
It's expensive (and cold) to get eggs shipped from far away.
I'd like to try with cheap(er)...
I am dusting off and breaking out the brooder I built about three years ago to brood quail.
You can't tell all of its fine features from this photograph. It is four feet by three feet and three feet high. It was in my living room years ago and is now in the garage.
In the foreground is...
Here, to fuel your creative tendencies, is the beginnings of my chicken tractor.
I was lucky enough to obtain this off Craigslist recently:
It is a chainlink kennel 6Lx6Wx4 with one gate. The chickens for it are just eggs right now, so I have some time to think about it.
Some finishing...
I put 48 eggs in the incubator Monday. 29 Rhode Island Red, 19 Barred Rock from a local source. Much more than I need, but we'll see what hatches.
I don't have a good way to measure humidity. I have a Radio Shack transmitter, but it won't fit inside with all the eggs.
From my memory of...
