I was concerned that the trauma might have left them a bit mentally irregular. Unfortunately my healthcare plan won't cover Poultry Psychiatrists, so they're just gonna have to honker down on the floor if they have a mind to! ;o)
That's pretty much the set up I have. The coop & small run are pretty bomb proof. No door on the coop but nothing is getting in the small run once closed! The problem was, although raised in the coop from day 1, they refused to sleep in it from the age of 10 to 12 weeks. I got tired of...
Bobcat returned last night! This time left bitterly disappointed as the remaining hens have realized just how dangerous sleeping under the stars can be! Unable to set date & time on camera!
Sorry for your loss. I recently lost 3, half my flock to what turned out to be a Bobcat. I live in town have a fenced yard & have not had a predator loss in the 7 or so years I've had chickens. This is my second flock, just coming to point of lay. This flock for some reason would never roost...
General rule of thumb is 4 square feet per bird inside, 10 out. However, there are variables in this, climate, personalities of the hens, free range, etc. It is possible to fudge a bit...maybe. I had 4 Wyandottes in a 9 sq. ft coop for many years never had any problems but they had 300 sq ft...
Chicks were under the brooder when I checked on them last night. Apparently, they were just too lazy to travel all the way across the coop to keep warm.
Temps range from low 60s to low 100s. Generally low to mid 80s at dusk. Little buggers are 1 week old. I usually find them in a puppy pile under the feeder. Last night I shoed under the plate just before dark only to find them back under the feeder at full dark. Placed them under plate...
I have some week old chicks. Are they able to find their way to the ecoglow brooder in the dark? The past 6 nights I've been putting them under after dark, getting tired of doing it but I don't want to be stayin up all night to check on them. Don't want them getting cold either temps dropping...
Is there anything worse than having to go outside to break up a catfight at 2am? I just had to do it, which is why I mention it. I don't have cats! Your neighbors got a lot of nerve whining about your hens
I had a slw start @ 23 weeks. 1 slw & glw start @ 25 weeks. The final glw @ 47 weeks, she was the worst layer of the group often taking week long breaks.
I find it amusing that people who complain about chickens making some noise during the day are willing to listen to someone's stupid mutt(s) bark 24/ 7.
In my limited experience I too believe that it is the individual chicken that is quiet not the breed. For 3 1/2 years I had 4 Wyandottes, my...
Hey & that's only the poo you've seen them eat. Cat poo, dog poo & who knows what other kind of poo is probably also on the menu. They're not called DOGS for nuthin!
I wondered what I would do when it came down to it. Had they not been so mean to the pullet I was trying to add to the flock they would have survived another year. Originally, I was trying to add 2 but1 was a cockerel. I culled him last week! My fault, sexed or not I never should have gotten...
Thanks, for the response! I did them one at a time, opting to skin instead of plucking. Went fairly well, none too fast though. I doubt I will be getting much faster since I will only be doing this every 3 plus years or so.
I have 3 hens to process. I have only processed one bird to date so I'm rather slow. I would really like to kill them all at once but I'm concerned about being able to get them cleaned up & on ice in a reasonable time. I realize temperature plays a major factor here & they should be on ice as...
