We've had chickens for a few years and I've read that you can have cats live in your coup. My question is where/how do you provide an access that the cat can come/go but will be inaccessible to most predictors? I understand nothing is foolproof but does anyone have a way for their cats to access...
I don't know what I'm doing but for what it's worth my meat and turkey chicks were not eating and one died. I went to the feed store and bought antibiotics and electrolytes and added them to their water. I don't know which it was but they came out of it in a couple of days.
For what it's worth here's my exp and advice I've been given.
1. My birds wouldn't go in at night. I was told to put a light in and to make sure it was ventilated. Did both haven't had an issue since.
2. I was obsessing over taking my run down and letting them free range. I thought I'd never see...
Our chickens have free ranged for about 6 weeks without a hitch. The last two nights they won't go in at night, even well after dark. I have two windows open and haven't had the lamps on for a while. It's about 60 degrees when the sun goes down.
I have 28 Cornish/Guineas in the coop that made it to 6/8 weeks without a hitch. I bought 10 more guineas and two turkeys and its been a life/death struggle. I lost 2 guineas today and one of the turkeys seems sick. I started them on antibiotics in their water and electrolyte/vitimins in their...
I moved 28 chicks (6 weeks old) into the coop and it isn't going very well. I got a corner boarded/fenced off but the hen can still get in once in a while. She guards the food and water pecking at the chicks whenever they get close to her. If I can't keep her out of there I think I'm going to...
This year I'm using pine and it's horribly messy. I have a friend that says all he's ever used is straw and he's never had a problem. Next time I'm using straw.
I would think so, from what I've read about them they'll eat anything that moves. Our dog killed all but 1 of our guineas so I have to completely start over.
What age can you start feeding pelleted feed? Mine are around 4 weeks. It's probably not as bad as I make it out but every time I go out I'm like "you've got to be kidding me." I check my Cornish 4-5 times a day but they'd be fine with once in the morning and once at night.
We're on 16 wooded acres. I bought hanging feeders/waterers today, I hope that helps. I'm amazed at the difference between the guineas and the Cornish. Once they start free ranging I will provide them with food/water/shelter, they can take it or leave it I'm not going to fight with them.
These are definitely a bunch of weirdos. We got them mainly for the ticks so once they're out of the brooder there'll be food/water available and they can do whatever they want. I think I'm done filling their jars as much as I do. If you want to throw your food all over eventually you should...
I have 22 guineas and 28 Cornish in separate brooders. The Cornish are neat and tidy, not a lot of issues with food or water. The guineas on the other hand will almost immediately throw all their feed on the floor. They not only get bedding in their water but seem to poop directly in it more so...
I currently have 1 adult laying hen and am getting 50 chicks this Friday. For brooders I'm using two 100 gallon watering tubs. My question is do I need to worry about my hen going into the brooders and taking their food or killing them?
