Review by '' on item 'Dutch Hookbill'

I have a flock of 13 Dutch Hookbills in assorted, rare colors. They are beautiful birds, they are quiet as far as ducks go. Only my Muscovy have been quieter. They are very active and efficient foragers. The hens lay big blue-green eggs roughly every other day.

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Kindercare, are you in Colorado? These are without a doubt the calmest chicks I've raised of any breed. I've recently been letting them out of their pen to forage with the flock during the day. When it's time to go back in the pen I can walk up to them, reach down, and just pick them up. No...

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Any breeders here in Colorado? I'm near Colorado Springs. Just noticed today that one of my Svart cockerels(?) from Greenfire Farms is wooly. How common is that? Question for those with a bit more experience... Are the Svarthöna roosters aggressive? I love the calm, confident personalities...

Comment by 'WVMHP' in item 'Brabanter'

We just got our first Gold Brabanter chicks. I'm also in a very hash climate and so happy to hear they do well! May I ask where you got your chicks?

    Mapuche Huastec Thread

Beautiful birds! What are the qualities and characteristics of this landrace fowl? Did they originate from low-lying jungle areas or high-altitude mountainous areas? I assume they're very good at foraging their own grub? How are they as broodies and mamas? Are they good meat birds? Do the...

    Hatching at high altitude

So happy to find this thread! I'm also in Colorado but up around 9,200 feet. I've had abysmal hatch rates the past 3 years no matter what I've tried. I recently found a couple of helpful studies/articles on the topic: https://ucanr.edu/repositoryfiles/ca1311p8-64807.pdf This is an old...

BRINSEA ovaeasy incubator - how to level trays?

Thank you for this post. I'm having the same problem with my Ova-Easy 100. It always pauses about 25 degrees past level. Any further suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Icelandic Chickens

The Sheriff, Wow, what beautiful birds!! I happened to have my computer monitor view enlarged to 200% when I landed upon your old post, the very first in this thread. The photo of 'Ici' caught my eye because I have a nearly white young cockerel and was imagining he may end up looking much the...

    Understanding Basic Colour genetics (Mallards/Derivitives)

Wow, that's a ton of great information. Thank you for posting! I'm brand new to color genetics and not sure I understand. I have a flock of Saxony ducks and I have a pair of Khaki Campbells. Is there any cross between them that would give me sex-linked ducklings? If I bred the KC drake to...

    Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hello all. I'm in the Colorado Springs area and I have about 15 SFH cockerels from Greenfire Farms new bloodlines, currently 2 and 3 months old. If anyone is interested, please PM me. I'd like to find them homes soon or it'll be off to freezer camp. :( Local pickup only. I'm not NPIP yet...

    Hedemora Thread

Does anyone on this thread have a white Hedemora rooster? If so, can you tell me if white in the Hedemora landrace is dominant or recessive? I know that varies by breed. I am trying to keep as much color in my flock as possible and need to choose between my white roo and my black roo. Also...

What other ducks can successfully mate with a welsh harlequin?

My Cayuga drake bred one of my chocolate-pied Muscovy hens. The resulting ducklings were ENORMOUS!!! Far bigger and prettier than any Muscovy or other ducklings I've ever seen! They are, of course, sterile. Beautiful, iridescent black pied ducklings that would have made fantastic meat...

how to keep the ducks alive during winter

We live at 9,200ft elevation and it gets very cold here, particularly at night. My Silver Appleyards choose to sleep out in the open until it gets below 0F at which point most of them sleep inside an extra-large doggy igloo located in a predator-proof pen. Often a single sentinel drake will...

    Hedemora Thread

Do any of you have white Hedemora hens? The only white Hedemora I've seen (or Greenfire Farms says they know of) have all been roosters. They're shipping me a white silkie roo, and I'm wondering what I'll get when I breed him to all of my primarily black silkie hens? The breeder thinks the...
