I have found the pine chips are much better than the straw. It has a great smell to it that seems to last for awhile. My experience with straw is this- we calve out 300 head of mother cows in the barn, we use straw as bedding but it has to be cleaned out and new put in every few days as it...
I can't believe how crazy mine are for BOSS! They nearly attack me when I walk in with the scoop full of feed and I have 65 of them! They love it so much!
My coop is probably about 75 years old. My mother and father in law have had chickens since they were first married. My husband and I inherited the property that the coop is on and our house . We just took over the chickens from them. My son absolutely loved them and would sell eggs all...
My girls are eating more too, the temps have been below 0 here. Feeding more scratch and layer pellets too. Eating creates heat within their bodies. My horses are eating more too.
Well, this morning when I went out to feed it was -25. The girls were up and moving around in the coop, I doubt they will go out in the run though. I don't have a heat lamp on them. I am just having a hard time keeping the water from freezing up. And I am not a northerner, I'm in...
-25 here this morning. Chickens preferred to stay in the coop ! Outside water was frozen solid so I brought out a bucket of hot water and put in the coop. This cold spell is suppose to last a few days. The girls seemed to be alright. I have plastic on the windows and they have plenty of...
My coop is sand over dirt and now I have added lots of leaves and will be adding wood shavings. It gets anywhere from 0 to -30 here in the dead of winter and I will not be adding heat. We have had chickens for many years and have never had heat in the coop.
I just added 9 new hens into my flock of 60 now making 69. I just put them in and they were just fine. There was a little bit of sizing each other up for a few days but they are just fine now!
Ridiculous! Are they afraid the chickens are going to peck someone to death? I have chickens , horses and dogs on my property and I have never had anyone from my insurance company come take a look, but then I don't live in FL. I am so sorry for you. Hope things work out.
Thanks for all your input. We have had chickens for many years and yes they do survive at - 30. However , our winter nights are usually 0 to -20, -30 doesn't happen too often. And yes we do drain the hose every time we use it but it is a pain. So we usually haul buckets. I guess after...
It gets anywhere from 0 to -30 here. So the hose usually freezes and does not thaw for quite sometime! Guess I will just have to keep hauling buckets! First snow last night. Most of it gone now. But it will be back to stay soon.
