    Black Jersey Giant thread!!!!!

I was going to get some leghorns this year but changed my mind. I get so many eggs from my BJG's I got all I can do to get rid of them! Pretty sure almost all of mine were laying by 4-7 months. They are big birds but I've trained them to stay in my yard, and when I let them out there they hardly...

How old should my chicks be to go outside?

I agree with mingirl. I let them run around outside for awhile while I do outside chores. Let them get used to it a little more each day. If they have their feathers they will get used to it pretty quick. The first few times out on grass is pretty funny to watch!

    Black Jersey Giant thread!!!!!

The birds getting out in the grass after a long winter. Was pretty funny at first. Stretching their wings and trying to fly with the "winter weight" hahaha. Lost one last fall due to what must have been a heart attack during a bad tstorm. Otherwise all are intact. Even one that just about killed...

    Am I crazy

I agree. Chickens know if they are hot or cold. If you raise chickens by the book... You'll go nuts. Let them do what they do. Many so called chicken experts get their info from other people who get their info from other people who get their info from.... You get the point. Remember playing the...

How to get chicks to come to me?

And if you don't want to use scraps. A container of night walkers is always a good time. Hahaha I love it, regular feed on a fancy plate! I do that too.

    Girly Hurley Lost her chickens

Got an incubator? How big of a flock do you want? I've only hatched out 10 doz of my eggs but so far it's 100%. I'll throw in some eggs to help you rebuild. Actually I've never mailed eggs, maybe I should look into it before opening my mouth lol. But if it's easy enough I'm willing to send a few...

4 foot, or 4 foot 6 inch tall fence?

I have BJG's who wouldn't hop a two ft fence unless they were getting killed or I try to use a tape measure. ( no idea why that freaks them out so much!). My run is 6'6". The reason is, I'm 6' tall and know that I'll have to get in there now and then and I'm not belly crawling to get the waterer...

How to get chicks to come to me?

Food and repetition. That's your answer right there. I give mine all our scraps and they know it. Pick a call you want to use all the time and bring scraps. They will learn that call means good things and come running. When I step out and hollar "here chicky chicks" all you see is black jersey...

    screaming chicken

I've got a flock of BJG's and they take after my wife. Quiet and content until they get upset! Wouldn't even know they were around until someone wants an occupied nest box or I forget to throw the corn n oats out for them in the morning! Oh yeah the head mama let me know about that one!

    Can a Rooster turn crazy?

I got curious, how did things turn out for this bird? My roo got a little snotty himself a week or so ago and rather than eat him I decided to try something. It worked great!! Then I remembered this post.

When will my flock start laying?

I give mine every single scrap that comes out of the kitchen. Garlic, onions, potato peels... Yup. Meat, bones, you name it and the answer is yes. They love it. And well it's just some of the best fun you could have watching them. You haven't lived til you've seen a chicken running around with a...

2 yr old rooster has gone psycho

My rooster has been fine ever since then. He is back to being my little buddy and is nice to everyone now. It's like a child, you can't discipline them once and expect it to last forever. I'm sure he will try again and he will get the same result. Yes I do have children and yes I WILL always be...

2 yr old rooster has gone psycho

Maybe try what I did. It worked wonders. Mind you I did not kick him. Just put my foot up do he went after that n just pushed him down. He just squared up to the neighbor kids when they came over and I went and stood in between. He looked for a minute and walked away and has left them alone...

2 yr old rooster has gone psycho

I recently had a similar few episodes with my very calm BJG roo. At first I wasn't sure if that's what he was going for but after a few days he grew a pair and squared up to me and came at me like he meant business. At first I was going for the first thing I could find to take him out and put...
