Got an old broody hen, has been for months now, that wants to fight with Roo. He's new yet slightly larger than her but she knows how to fight. We keep her caged.
Is it wise to just let him figure it out?
Had a bad attack last week and lost 8 hens to what appeared to be a feral cat. Clear Cat tracks in snow around coop and entry point.
It chewed the backs of their heads on most birds.
Was looking for an ultrasonic protection from all but birds. The area is netted and now 1/2" wire...

Entertainment isn't easy these days yet I've found old outdoor kids plastic toys cheaply and at garage sales.
The chickens need a swing set???
Plenty of things to do and hide....
Yup, have to cover all perches, roosts and platforms with 6ml plastic. Stapled on. Easy to clean/scrape.
Seen some nice wooden coops and it's a shame they'll end up soiled and dinge .
In 2013 summer I took an old evap core out of a truck and made it into a geothermal a/c unit via RV coolant, pump and dug lines.
Even laid lines in the floor like radiant floor.

Was thinking about sterilizing the pen ground with some straight Apple Cider Vinegar.
Anyone try this ??
Getting tired of...
Daily my wife puts some oats and oil seed in a metal pan. Mmmmmm.. Goodies!
Yesterday I had put the pan up on some wood chip bag to clean.
Having forgot it, later on that night I found out that one pullet jumped on the pan, flipped it over onto herself and was found later still undercover!
Oh...
My flock seems bent on the regular 1 gallon water feeders. (sip feeder)
Yet they freeze up quickly. Have tried the heated ones and they draw a lot of power to keep it unfrozen.
The nipple feeders don't seem to appeal to them.
Any ideas ??
Hello all,
Got a problematic Barred Rock about 3 years old. She had developed Vent Gleet (Slimy Butt) during the winter and didn't notice until March sometime when the slime advanced to her underbelly. Took preventative and action measures to, "Dry her out". Epsom salt bath with blow dry...
