    Does anyone else Free Range?

I am so sorry. I see what you mean by him looking at the coop. Would something like that attack, say a 5 year old child if they were outside alone? What about an electrical fence around an area to give that monster a little tingle? My husband doesn't like the chicken and duck poop on our...

    Does anyone else Free Range?

Wow! What part of the country do you live in? It looks like early morning in this picture. We don't let our chickens/ducks out of their locked coop until 7:30 am. We also have a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd that leave their scent all over the place. They're kept in the house at...

    Pekin Duck Club!

It doesn't sound cruel. I'm glad it worked for you. I'm having the same problem with my Pekin drake. I received 2 Blue Swedes, a Buff and a Pekin...all females. For some reason he doesn't like the female Pekin and chases her away from his "group", the food, the water. I'm glad everything...

    Drake ostracizing one female.

Thank you. Four of the girls all came in August. They all get along and he was getting along with her too. Now, all of a sudden she is singled out. I think maybe separating him by himself like you said, for the day, might make him a little more appreciative.

    Drake ostracizing one female.

I wonder if anyone can give me some insight on my Pekin drake's behavior. He was hatched in April and grew up with a Buff female. In August I acquired 2 female Blue Swedish, and 1 Pekin female. In the beginning him and his little Buff friend ignored them. As they got older the babies would...

    Dog chasing my ducks.

My German Shepherd 1 year old and Golden Retriever 2 years old leave the ducks and chickens alone. But I have seen them just a couple of times rush at them to watch them scatter. I think they think it's a great joke. Other than that, they never look at them. I have one cat that will hide in...

    Pekin duck....treats??

I give mine anything and everything. They don't like sardines or bananas. LOVE mealworms and scrambled eggs. Chopped up Kale and romaine lettuce. Left over dinner. They had beef stroganoff this morning. Love spaghetti and it's hilarious to see the Pekins faces orange afterwards. Sometimes...

    Ducks and mirrors

I have a mirror hanging off a tall driftwood stump in the run. Certain hens will go up to it and I have a female Pekin that will always go look at herself after she bathes.

    Does anyone else Free Range?

Same thing happened to us in August. Husband, myself, the German Shepherd, the Golden Retriever and probably the ginger male cat were all in the front yard having an ice tea. Watching the flock of 2 ducks, 14 hens. We were sitting under the maple tree and also watching the 4 new ducklings in...

    Does anyone else Free Range?

Regarding your mention of dirty eggs. In our 5 nest boxes we have pine shavings. Some hens sleep in the nest boxes at night and poop in there. Every morning when I let them out, I fill up the water and food, and take a trowel or scoop and just scoop up the poop into a empty gallon plastic ice...

    Does anyone else Free Range?

I usually open my coop (which is a re-done horse stall) at 7:00. I have 14 hens, one drake Peken, and 4 females that are Pekin, Buffs, and Blue Swedes. They all run past me and head towards the house which is about 180 feet away. There is a center garden with a Magnolia tree, nandina bushes...

    Pekin Duck Club!

Why not keep the drakes? It is suggested you have 3-5 female for every drake, OR have all females, OR have all drakes. Just have an all male flock.

    Another tractor supply duckling

I've heard others say their chicks get this. Its caused by a vitamin deficiency and is fixable. Sorry, I can't remember what vitamin. Might want to look in the chicken forums.

    Greetings and Salutations!

I have recently moved from Ontario, Canada to middle TN after my husband I retired from our jobs. We bought a 13 acre home with a nice barn. We have 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 3 birds. The barn on the property is fantastic and there is a horse stall that would be perfect for a chicken coop with a...
