The other night I found two large, glossy coated rats enjoying our expensive organic chicken feed. I’d estimate rats have been eating almost half of our feed. After researching treadle feeders, it seems like the Ratproof feeder would be a great option. Unfortunately, I have two hens (brabanter...
I noticed this young hen (8 months old) had a cloudy pupil when you shine a light toward her. She originally hatched from a shipped egg. I’m not sure if she was hatched this way or if it is some kind of sickness? That pupil does not dilate. Her other eye appears to be normal. Am I dealing with...
She’s had one round of oxytetracycline. I removed one large kernel on 9/12. I could not find any other kernels though did remove some stringy bits today and last week. The swelling is not going down, which makes me think something is still in there. Someone advised me to cut her foot and try to...
My hen was bitten by a Texas rate snake last week and this week she has a nasty case of bumblefoot. Not sure if it’s related to the snake bite on her leg. This is the first time I’ve dealt with bumble foot so feeling overwhelmed. I was told to NOT treat surgically, but to use Prid and wrap daily...
This has been the most difficult chick to figure out gender. Fourteen weeks and no crowing yet, but we have quite the fancy hairdo going on. Thoughts? I was hoping by 14 weeks, I would know for certain boy or girl. I’m still unsure. 🥴
I know all feathering patterns point to cockerel. Any chance it might be a pullet? Should we just accept that this is indeed a boy. No crowing yet. We dearly love this chicken, but can’t keep roos.🤦🏻♀️
We thought we had a pullet, but now I am second guessing. I think I see narrow saddle feathers? Sadly, we're not allowed to have roos so need to figure out if this she is actually a he.😅 Thoughts?
“Pepper” is 9 weeks old. I thought she was a hen, but her coloring looks more like a dark Brahma rooster? Does the pattern vary for dark Brahma hens or perhaps she’s a mix. She came from a rainbow mix set of hatching eggs.
I have 19 6-7 week old chicks. Two chicks were aggressively feather picking and we removed them to a separate area a couple weeks ago. Everything has been fine since and everyone healed up nicely. The 17chicks are outdoors in a very large run area during the day and at night enclosed in a...
5 week old chick, which hatched from a shipped egg. Even though this breed is autosexing, we may have got it wrong. Kids have named him Washington. Could Washington actually be a pullet? 😂
A couple days old here:
These hatched from a barnyard mix. Too young to tell sex? The first one one seems very “protective.” The other two are more calm. Second set (black chick) of pics might be too blurry. I’ll try to get better ones tmrw of him/her.

This chick is about 3 weeks old. The cross beak has progressively been getting worse and now appears quite severe. Hatched from local hatching eggs. My question is can this one survive? We definitely would never breed it. Can't have roosters anyway. I don't have the capacity to hand feed a...
Just want to confirm that this baby has died. I haven't seen movement lately. Thoughts?
It did get kicked around once on Day 19 before I could move it to safety. Trying to work up the courage for an eggtopsy.
These are almost certainly mixed breeds, but is it possible to guess what mix they might have? Feathered legs came from a light brown egg. The very light gray/creamy poof ball baby (darker gray around the eyes) came from a light brown egg and the mottled gray, black and white came from a green egg.
Three of my Blue Star chicks have fuzzy legs like this. Does this mean they would have feathered legs as an adult? Wondering if they accidentally gave me cochins or something else? 😭
This chick is about 4 days old. One of her wings looks a bit off where it hangs lower at all times than the other wing. Any need for concern at this point?
I read an article that recommended to stop turning by day 13 (since baby is turning toward air cell). Has anyone tried this? Most articles say stop turning at lockdown.
Last hatch I stopped on day 14 and still had two malpositioned chicks out of eight. Four were shipped eggs, hatched upright...
