I LOVE this article! It is my favorite! Years ago I saw a similar article in Geoff Lawton - which was my very favorite of his! Somehow it is so heart-warming! Thank you!
When our flock was larger and had 2 roosters, for years they always put themselves to bed a half hour before sunset. It was amazing. But later when the flock was smaller and the roosters had been gone awhile, they began staying up a little later sometimes.
Just discovered the Duck Chronicles. Couldn't stop reading for 4 hours! LOVED the story. LOVE the pictures. I am a survivor of cancer, of raising ducklings, & a chicken owner!
That one long post of good eating advice was 100% right on! (only took me 17 years to progress to that myself )...
I'm so glad I found this thread! I had never heard of this before! Our 5-yr-old Silver Aeracauna, Ruth, who lays smooth white eggs, is our rooster's girlfriend. They have hung-out together for years and usually perch together too. This morning I was out there at early dawn and the rooster...
I think somebody asked about her. She was given to us with several other chicks and we were told they were Aeraucanas. ? This hen laid the very first egg we ever had -- it was a light blue-green. Then she out-lived all her "siblings" and still lays; but at 7, her eggs are light gray now...
One year we had 8 chicks and 6 ducklings in the brooder. Those chickens grew up quite comfortable around the ducks, while the older chickens kept away from the ducks. The only problem was how much ducks always mess up their drinking water. But it was a fun experience.
When you're too old to run 100 yards, but you can do it when they sound the alarm call!
BTW: A bald eagle got our silkie. We heard the flock's "alarm." When we ran, it majestically flew away. There were 2 large piles of white feathers. The third heap was our roo - but he was still...
Our first year keeping chickens, we ignorantly gave away a gorgeous young rooster. Next time around, we kept them -- 2 little silkies (bought cuz they make good moms!) Ever since, we never worry when they free-range. Eagles & hawks closer than usual? Whole flock totally hidden and silent...
Our Cassia is 5, and has always flown up on to our backs or shoulders, on her own, since chickhood. But it's so neat to read your training ideas!
We accidentally have 2 Silkie roosters; they always get the hens in before sunset, or hidden in silence if there's a danger. But if we need to do it...
We got 2 Silkies cuz we heard they make good moms. Here are Gala & Meli (Milk & Honey):
We took extra special care of our silkies, bringing them inside in bad weather:
Of course after a few months Gala started to crow:
Naturally before long Meli did too. Now the hens have 2 truly...
