Question about ventilation in coop - windows are frosting up and some birds have frostbite.

So it sounds like I need more ventilation. I've opened a window a bit - the window is well above roost height, and on the opposite side of the coop, so I don't think it will create a draft, but should facilitate more airflow up and out through the cupola. Here's hoping, anyway! I will plan...

Question about ventilation in coop - windows are frosting up and some birds have frostbite.

No, I don't feed them anything other than their feed and sometimes BOSS and a little scratch.

Question about ventilation in coop - windows are frosting up and some birds have frostbite.

Hi Welshies - thanks for the quick response! I read about the ventilation on here, and I thought that since my cupola and vents provide more of an "active" ventilation, it did not require the same 1 sf per bird, that's why I started measuring the humidity levels. If they're hanging around 50%...

Question about ventilation in coop - windows are frosting up and some birds have frostbite.

Like many of you, I'm struggling with these cold temps. I have a roo with frostbite on his comb, and a few girls with some discoloration. I have 15 birds in a 6x8 coop. It is draft free, and there is venting at the eaves, with a hip style roof and a functional cupola. There are single pane...

Rhode Island Reds and White Plymouth Rock - 11 Weeks old

Thanks everyone - that's what I thought. Their personalities fit, too, as they have all been very friendly and not at all timid. Looks like they're going back to the farm!

10 week old Easter Eggers - Pullet or Cockerel?

Thanks everyone. I'm a bit disappointed that Bella turns out to be Beau, but oh well! On another note - Red is definitely a little 'roo - he started crowing today!

Part 2 - 10 Week Old Easter Eggers - pullet or cockerel

they are about 10 weeks old. They were from a local "breeder" - not from a hatchery. She is not bearded. I'm sure there was a mix-up somewhere. She's nothing like my other SLW.

Part 2 - 10 Week Old Easter Eggers - pullet or cockerel

Hello Again, I made an earlier post with 4 of my EE chicks, and here are the other 4: This black and white one, I'm guessing is a cockerel: And this cute little thing we're calling Tina Turner - I mean - look at that hair! I think it's a pullet. Then we have Katniss - because...

10 week old Easter Eggers - Pullet or Cockerel?

Hello All, I'm trying to sex these chicks, as I need to re-home some roosters due to overcrowding in my coop. I have my guesses as to what they are, but was hoping for some of your expert opinions. . . I have 8 total, but I'll limit this post to 4. I'm not sure how to do this with the...

6 week old chick sick - Cocci or Heat stroke?

It's heartbreaking! It's been a rough spring . . . in May I lost 7 of my 10 laying hens to bear attacks. That's why the remaining 3 and all my new babies have been living in the garage. The coop has been rebuilt, but it's hard trying to re-train them to live in the coop again. They seem to...

6 week old chick sick - Cocci or Heat stroke?

**UPDATE** Unfortunately, she did't make it through the night. At this point, I'm not sure if I should treat the rest of the flock with Corid, just in case. Any thoughts?

Help- advice needed - Chicken lethargic, off balance, poofed up and hiding

Hello! I'm not sure I can help, but thought I'd touch base. I saw your post just after posting my own, similar questions. My 6 week old is acting similarly - no signs of blood in the poop. I can't decide if it's cocci, or heat stroke, as her symptoms started the day after they were panting...

6 week old chick sick - Cocci or Heat stroke?

Hi All, I have 8 chicks, all about 6 weeks old. We also have 5 older birds, about 10 weeks old, and 3 1.5 year old hens. They do free range, and sleep in my garage at night. (Due to a bear attack, the coop is being re-built!) Several days ago we had a little heat wave, and I noticed the...

Bear Attacked my coop - chickens comb is half ripped off! Please help!

Thanks KelsT, - unfortunately, the superglue didn't hold. I will probably try again. I've wrapped her in a towel to restrain her, then my husband helps while we hold her down and apply the glue. What an experience!

Bear Attacked my coop - chickens comb is half ripped off! Please help!

I tried superglue, but the comb has come loose again. I'm not sure that's going to be the answer. If I were to dub, how would you recommend cauterizing?

Bear Attacked my coop - chickens comb is half ripped off! Please help!

Well, so far I've bathed everyone and cleaned them up. The Barred Rock, Teriyake, with the broken beak seems to be ok. I did make up some mash and gave that to her, which she ate. She also ate some fruit i cut up really small for her. She's been out scratching and pecking, and with some...

Bear Attacked my coop - chickens comb is half ripped off! Please help!

Hi Al - Yeah, overall I think we were all pretty lucky. My guess is it was a mama bear looking for food for her cubs. She did take one of my chickens with her, as I can't find any remains other than feathers. My bigger concern now is how to secure the coop. The bear actually ripped the...
