I might give that a try in the spring. Thanks for the info. My first project is going to be the solar panel I think. I still have to finish shingling the back of the coop too and I've been thinking of expanding their run. There are always more and more projects! hahaha
Thanks again for the info.
In the summer I hang my waterer to keep it clean but in order to use my heater, the waterer has to sit on it. I have read about using a bucket with the nipples. I guess my only question with that would be whether or not I would have ice problems in winter.... ? Maybe have to use a submersible...
Great article. I got my chickens and built my coop this past spring and I have been contemplating exactly how to go about adding a solar panel to power my coop off grid. That will be a spring time project. Lots of great ideas here and presented very well! I have a water heater that was given to...
When I got my chickens I expected to like the buff orpingtons the best. I doo like them but I also got barred rocks and white Plymouth rocks. Of the 3, the white Plymouth rocks are my favorite.
I agree. I think for the most part they know what they can eat and what they cant. I've been following this thread loosely for a while and the different opinions are very good. I have to wonder though if the timing of starting the different types of feed is really that critical. Especially the...
Thank you for the compliments. I live in Connecticut. I've actually been kicking around the idea of covering a section of the run for shade in the summer.
The coop is 8x12 and the run is 12x16. I was going to do a different style roof to match my garage but I got ahead of myself and by the time...
As long as we're talking about chicken feed, what is the benefit of feeding crumbles vs. mash? When I was a kid I don't recall there even being crumbles available. We fed our chickens layer mash.
Hey everyone. I just wanted to add that I was told by my local feed store to keep them on starter for 8 weeks and then switch them to grower until 16 weeks before changing them to layer. Sounded pretty reasonable to me....
Thanks! I'm not a total newbie to chickens we had lots when I was a kid. Actually I had a couple mallard ducks too. They are really fun to watch. I have been enjoying the whole process of building the coop, picking out what breeds I wanted, watching them grow and learn how to be chickens etc. I...
Thanks! I have checked it out. Before I joined I actually spent a lot of time on here and other places reading things. I just always thought chickens hated to be wet... hence the saying "mad as an old wet hen" Totally threw me when I saw them all out scratching around in the rain.
Hi my name is Jerry and I'm new to this site. I don't usually join things like this but I just got some chicks a while back after not having any for many years and I decided to join. I got a lot of good info from this site and others before I purchased my chicks.
Ever since I got my chicks...
Awesome pic!
The other day I was squatting down in the coop with one chick on my knee and another flew up to land on my head.... she missed the landing but how I wish I could've had a camera set up!
So much fun!
