    Swedishfishs Chicken Coop

Swedishfish's Amazingly Wonderful Chicken Page 2 Buff Brahmas, 5 Wyandottes Thanks to these two, my brother's old pheasant/chukar/quail coop was falling apart and I was "forced" to build a new one. My mule thinks she's a chicken. It's really rather funny. Unfortunately my mom wouldn't let me...

    gender? *tons of pics*

Athena is actually the oldest of these chickas. She was at IFA at least a week earlier than the last week of March when I got them all. She used to tower over the others. I think it's either the picture or the fact that she's by a huge waterer, or that she's now smaller compared to the orps...

    gender? *tons of pics*

thanks everyone! I am so glad...I bought them all so I would have 12 birds total and didn't want another roo, I'd have to kull one. So I am glad. And yes, my mistake, she is a Golden laced, not red laced. I must be color blind But I can still see that she's gorgeous.

Questions about a Little Tikes coop

I put mine on tiled plywood and have it on rollers to move it around. It would be more secure in a covered run. hey! i used to have that yellow play house!! Now it's my niece's! When she gets older maybe I'll take it back!

These chicks are about 13 weeks old, judging by when I bought them. I got them from IFA at the end of March. Can anyone tell gender yet? I am unskilled at such things. Buff Orphingtons if that helps, and one Red Laced Wyandotte. Ok... This is Athena. Hope I don't have to change her name. no...

    Got a screamer!

get a mirror! I've raised chicks by themselves with a mirror in their brooder. The mirror is good for chicks who peck because the reflection pecks back and keeps them interested, so they leave everyone else alone. Also, the mirror gives the chick a bit of company, in a way.

    If I.....

ok. using 9th grade biology here.... if both silke crosses were from purebred silkies and purebred whatever you crossed them with, their trait would be something like S for silkie feathers and n for normal feathers. Breeding these two together, you would get: S n S SS Sn...

    3 New Chicks (What Breed?)

#1 is NOT a buff brahma. #2 doesn't look like an EE to me. my EE had two dark stripes down her back, and was a completely different color.

odd chick sexing technique, anyone seen this?

I tried the "scruff of the neck" test with my chicks. Since I didn't mark them or anything, I dont' know how accurate I was. But when I did the test I had two roos and two hens. turned out that way too.

Older chickens getting white feathers - why?

I understand your theory though SteveH! Sometimes when a horse gets a cut, the scar will grow in with lighter hair. My horse has a few white hairs just from old age, so I guess that would make sense that that's what would happen to chickens too. I must admit it looks pretty awesome.

Older chickens getting white feathers - why?

ok. so sort of like leaves? when the green (majority) chlorophyl stuff dies out in autumn, the other colors show through.

Older chickens getting white feathers - why?

I don't know how old he is. His previous owner had a ton of chickens, but died, and his family was giving them away. It's pretty awesome though, it reminds me of those guys who have the lighter streaks in their hair of gray. Very cool looking. I'll take a picture and post it tomorrow.

Older chickens getting white feathers - why?

My black wyandotte roo suddenly has a few wing feathers that are white. Not necessarily SUDDENLY, I guess. I just haven't noticed when they appeared and know they weren't on him when I got him. They look pretty cool with his shiny black-ness, but I was wondering why he's got them now. Is it...

    Broody Hens

When I had broody hens, I didn't separate them from the rest because they seemed to be fine with everyone. I've had two hens go broody together twice. My two wyandottes raised a brood together and were even fine raising the four chicks together. Here's some pictures! I have had some broodies...
