Prairie Bluebell - male or female?

I believe it is a pullet. It looks just like my bluebell prairie egger. She started laying blue eggs at about 6.5 months. She is smaller than my Rhode Island reds or my barred rocks.

    Dead chicken

Similar thing happened to mine a few months ago. She was free ranging just fine during the day and then went to roost like she did every night. No sounds of distress during the night. But lying on her side with her neck tucked in the next morning, dead. The only thing I noticed weird was a bald...

    Acute death with no marks

I will be interested to hear what others think. Just lost my only chicken. She had watery stools the afternoon of her death but other than that nothing odd. She died in her coop after she went to roost.

    Barred Rock Hen Acting Strange

Hope she recovers. I just lost my barred rock. Her last couple of stools were watery with brown pellet size stools in it. Other than that she was completely normal. She laid an egg the day she died. She was eating, etc. In the morning she was dead. Wish I knew what happened.

    Dead chicken

Oh one more thing. She laid an egg that day so she wasn't bound up. And there was no sound of trouble from the coop all night long. She is my only chicken.

    Dead chicken

There was no sign of injury. She had a loose stool in the coop with a couple little white clumps in them. Someone said maybe she swallowed a pebble? Also when I buried her she had a bald reddish spot on her underside.

    Dead chicken

My barred rock just passed away in the coop last night. She was 1 1/2 yrs old. Appeared in great health. Was free ranging eating and drinking normal the day of her death. She had a couple loose stools but other than that I didn't see smuthing strange. She went to roost at 8:00. I closed up the...

Anyone ever walk their chickens on a leash?

I am also worried if she sees greener pastures she may try to find them on her own!

Anyone ever walk their chickens on a leash?

Thanks! Somewhere in this thread someone suggested a small dog harness or a cat harness. I bought a cheap one to try out but so far am having difficulty getting it on her!

I plan to try a medium cat harness on my Opal- so excited! Does it go under her wings?

Can you walk a chicken on a leash?

I have small yard and would love if I can take my hen for a walk to the park or school yard (after school hours) so she can get some grass and exercise.

    Small coop-one noisy hen?

This is all totally true. I listen to all those noises from my neighbors but I guess I am more considerate than most and so I worry about her screeching. Plus, luckily none of the neighbors on either side of me or directly behind me are noisy. But you bring up a valid point.

    Small coop-one noisy hen?

I don't think I can sing the song with her. I live in So Cal and the yards are very small. Neighbors are too close for my taste and that is why I am worried about get making noise. I will start looking for another chicken. Until then, I will go out and distract her if I am home.

    Small coop-one noisy hen?

Thanks everyone - you confirmed my suspicions that she may be lonely. My husband is not as excited about having chickens as I am and he compromised to one chicken. He doesn't like the idea of another one! My only thought is why is she quiet when she out free ranging? She is still totally...

    Small coop-one noisy hen?

As you can see , I have a small coop made from a kit and one barred rock or Dominique hen. I started with three chicks and gave away two as they grew and I could ser the coop was too small. I kept Opal who had the most personality. Now she has grown into a demanding squawking bird. She wants...
