Well, thank you both. I have checked her three times pretty carefully, and I just cannot find it. I did find an area where there were broken and missing feathers, so I cleaned that part of her body very carefully. I think she's going to be okay; I hope so. She's my favorite chicken. :-)
Thank you, I will check again and separate her. Sumi, did your juvenile die after the attack or during? If I still can't find the wound, should I wash her whole self down?
A hawk just tried to get one of my chickens, and the neighbor boy scared it off. There were a few drops of bright red blood on the chickens wing and a very small pool of blood right where she was standing, but I have combed her over and cannot find the source. She is mostly standing in shock...
This egg is still a mystery! When we ate it, I couldn't help noticing (again) that it was different in shape and slightly different in color, and also the inside of the shell was a different color than our leghorn lays. I am pretty sure she didn't lay it. But we also haven't seen any more like...
I have never seen another hen pull them out. I have seen her reach around there and pick at them, so I assumed it was her. That's why I upped the protein. She is definitely not bottom of pecking order.
I did, and they are different, so I assumed one of my newbs laid today. But then I thought that three months seems insanely early. And I have never had a white faced black spanish before...
Well, I know it isn't two eggs from two days. First, the leghorn had already laid yesterday. And second, I closed the laying house last night, and there were no new eggs in there this morning. These eggs were laid about four hours apart.
Any ideas how to help me help her? It started a couple of months ago, just prior to her being a year old. And the more time goes on, the more bare her neck.
I have checked for mites and lice on her and other birds and see no signs.
She is not being bullied.
I have switched their food to...
Is it more likely that my 6 month old leghorn, who has been laying for a couple of months now, laid two in one day, or that my 3 month old white faced black spanish laid for the first time?
Turns out that behavior isn't typical. I think she just had a couple of bullyish days. And all hens except my RIR have resumed laying. I am wondering if they all just got a little off from walking in on that snake.
Good thinking. That is probably what I will have to do right now because our isolation area is already being taken up by our faverolle, who is healing from some bumblefoot.
Ha! Ten years old? Go you! I fondly remember being ten. Don't underestimate yourself, little learner. At this rate, you'll be writing a book on chickens soon. :-) Feel free to share any knowledge you have on crazy black stars who keep me from getting my eggs.
Be careful on the Internet...
I love my ameraucanas! Beautiful eggs, soft-looking bird, fun breed. My gray one went broody at the end of spring, so we stuck some fertiized eggs under her, and she hatched them and has been a wonderful mother! Anyway, your white is a beauty!
