    pecking at her feet

One of my bantams is ripping her feet bloody. She seems to be ill. She's slow, wings hanging, doesn't eat. And, worst of all, she's constantly chewing on her legs and toes. My assumption is she lost sensation in her legs. Has anybody observed something like this?

Bantam keeps turning her head hectically. Please help.

Does anyone know these symptoms? The hen turns her head hectically from side to side, turns it towards the back and then quickly in the other direction. She seems a little confused. She goes onto a nest (not onto the roost) very early in the evening.

    run hygiene

I'm looking for ideas on how to keep a sandy chicken and quail run healthy and sustainable besides the regular cleaning. Is there an organic way to disinfect it a couple of times a year?

    sanitize the run

I'd be thankful for ideas on how to sanitize a sandy chicken/quail run. I clean it twice a day. But as you know, there are all the little and tiny parts of the feces that can't be picked up. I'd like to sanitize the whole run a couple of times a year.

    game hens with diarrhea

I took in 4 game hens. They were rescued from a cock fighting ring. I had to deworm them which took quite some time and resources. Now they have diarrhea, but only in the late afternoons, not in the morning, not at night. Could it be the food? They roam freely all morning. In the afternoons the...

    Thanksgiving

I am so deeply thankful for the little and always changing flock of chickens, game hens, and quail I rescued. They taught me how precious every life is, no matter if human or other. And it makes me happy to take as good care of them as I possibly can, right the wrongs, give back to a few members...

    book, photo-story, A Rooster's Tale

Can chickens talk? What does a rooster do all day? Would a mother hen attack a hawk? What happens within a family of chickens? We hear stories about prides of lions, see documentaries about dolphin behavior, know all about beavers and sharks. But what do we know about the life of a chicken? This...

    clogged nostrils

Is there anyone out there who has experience with clogged nostrils? What can I do? Do chickens clean their nostrils with their claws when they scratch themselves. My rooster's middle toes are bent outward. He can't use them for scratching. I'd very much appreciate some advice.

    dying quail

On April 1st I took in 11 domesticated quail. Until then I didn't even know such a quail existed. These birds were adolescents, almost fully grown. However, they could barely walk, they couldn't straighten up, they came with broken toes and feathers, and they were silent. They had no sense of...

    deworming

How do you feed the deworming pellets? They were prescribed by my vet. I got them at the feed store. But the chickens just don't like them.
