Mixing sprays - has anyone tried it?

I have a very dynamic flock of chickens, the number of birds I have at any given moment changes from week to week, from about 20 to as many as several hundred, depending on how many I sell that month. I breed baby chicks all year long and raise as many as 100 chicks per month. I usually...

I've been breeding Rhode Island Reds and I decided to take the plunge and buy some Barred Rocks so I can make 'Black Star' chickens. Does anyone have experience doing this? As I understand it the Black Stars don't breed true, has anyone every tried to breed them and if so what kind of mixes do...

Can you feather sex Rhode Island Reds?

I've been reading up on sexing baby chicks as soon as they hatch and I've just found out that sexing by the length of the wing feathers only works in certain breeds of chickens, not all. Does anyone know if Rhode Island Reds fall in this category? The other option is vent sexing and that is...

How long before eggs under broody hen are too late to pull for my incubator?

I've been collecting eggs every other day and I have a broody hen that sits on the eggs every once in awhile, she drives me crazy. I'm wondering if she sits on the eggs for a day and a half if it's too late to pull them and save them for my incubator. I'm trying to save up enough storing them...

Can you put different age chicks together?

Does anyone know what is acceptable in terms of putting together different age chicks? Can you put day old chicks in with week and a half old chicks? I have two incubators going and they are separated by about a week and a half but I don't want to have two separate brooders going.

Making a PROFIT from your chickens!

OK, lets talk about really managing your flock, and that is how to support it financially. I've been going in the hole a lot these past few years and it's mainly because I have three llamas that protect my chickens from bears and mountain lions. They do a great job of protecting the flock but...

    How do you ship eggs?

Can anyone post pics of how you would ship eggs or what kind of packing the breeder used to ship the eggs? I'm considering selling some fertile hatching eggs in the spring and need some ideas of how to ship them.

Which chicken is the hardest to catch?

My Rhode Island Reds are really easy to catch. I was wondering if anyone knows of a breed that is difficult or impossible to catch? Do you know any breeds that can fly over a six foot fence? I think I got lucky with my RIR flock since they stay put and are easily managed.

I put bands on my chickens today, very interesting!

I snuck in the coop just after dark and caught each bird and put a spiral band on each right leg. This was the first time I ever handled most of my chickens and it was very interesting. I had a few really light weight birds and they were all huddled around the rooster. Perhaps they were...

Need help with R-Com 20 Pro USB Software!

I consider myself pretty good on the computer but I just can't seem to figure out this software. I'm trying to make a new project in the RCOM software but there is one field I can't seem to fill in on the last step ('Incubator') and it errors out. I installed the software and driver on Win XP...

    Hatching Eggs the Scientific Way!

OK, I'm a geeky scientist and I have been busy with my new experiments in hatching chicken eggs! I've heard rumors that you can sex the egg before it hatches by how round it is and that the pointy eggs turn into roosters and the round eggs turn into hens. So my first experiment is to test this...

    Sexing Chicken Eggs...

I've seen several posts that say people can sex a chicken egg by how round it is. Has anyone ever measured this? I have a digital caliper that I use for reloading and I can measure the width and length of an egg very precisely. I'm guessing that there is a certain ratio of width to length...

    Chicken leg bands...need advice!

Well I have chickens again this year, 18 hens and a rooster. I'm planning on incubating some eggs on Monday and will have another round of birds. I was thinking of banding them to keep track of the age of the birds since they will all free range and I'll slowly replace my flock over the years...

    R-Com 20 Pro Incubator Modifications...?

I ordered an R-Com 20 Pro and I'm supposed to get it this week. Does anyone have this model of incubator? I'm thinking it may be possible to add a second level of eggs to this incubator, I imagine that it's OK if the eggs touch? I'm thinking you may be able to add at least one, maybe two...

Well my hen decided to sit on her eggs and after weeks of sitting she got off of the nest. I decided to candle the eggs, there were three just about to hatch, totally solid. Several others were in various stages of development all the way down to just a faint spot. Others were clear. I...
