    What did this?

Pretty sure it is not a bird. The run and coop are fully enclosed under my deck. It happened between dawn and 10am the temps were right at freezing so probably not lizards or snakes They free range but I had not opened the run for them yet. I do have a crazy number of voles and chipmunks...

    What did this?

Did my hens do this or somebody else? Found this shell in the coop about 3 feet from nest boxes. Fake egg from box was in run another 15 ft away and egg yoke was in both nest box and on fake egg. I am thinking other varmint not the chickens b/c they tried to carry off the fake egg. I have...

One hen has thin shells- What to do?

I have one hen, a 3 year old barred Rock, who lays a very thin shelled egg. The rest of my flock, a two year old and 5 pullets, are fine. In variably when she lays somebody breaks the egg and makes a mess. They have oyster shell available all the time and are on layer feed. What can i do...

    Being held and non laying

My girls are tame. All but one can be easily held and all squat for a good scratch. Then look at you like "what! that's it!" when you stop. BUT I raised most of them from day old and handled them nearly every day. the flightiest among them are the Olive egger and brown leghorn. the rest...

    Pullet always has wet head

I was hoping she will stop when it gets cold. I tried the nipple feeder when they were young but they seem to like a regular setup better. so I just have 3 gal gravity waterers. I want them to get lots of water especially when it is hot. Will they just use the nipple waterer if I take away...

    Pullet always has wet head

I have a 6 month old Salmon Favarolle who is always wet. I think she plays in the water when she drinks but her beard and muffs and even the top of her head is always wet. She likes to roll in the dust too and the combination makes for a dirty bird all the time. Is this normal? I've never...

    Old hen picking on pullets

OK now I am truly baffled. Olive laid her 12th egg in 12 days this morning. Then laid again this afternoon. The eggs are exactly the same! That's 13 eggs in 12 days. I have 4 pullets not laying yet but the only possible contributor would be the easter egger. Faverolle, golden comet and...

    Old hen picking on pullets

They might not be big yet but she is sure leading the way in quantity. Here's olive. I know quite the creative naming ehh? She has this little tuft on her head sometimes it sticks up sometimes not.

    Old hen picking on pullets

She came from a local hatchery in Lebanon MO - Cackle. Got her at 3 days old. No idea what her cross is. she cost more and I was hesitant since my experience is low, just 3 years. I guess it was a good risk!

    Old hen picking on pullets

Ok I'm going to add another roost. The 6 foot roost is 17 inches off the ground the new roost will be 12 inches high and 24 inches long together with blocking off the nest boxes at night hopefully we can get through. If this doesn't help I'll try another temp coop for the LH. I don't think...

    Old hen picking on pullets

When i integrated them I had a temp coop as well from the little girls brooder setup. But they all started using the main coop soon after I merged them. I could put a temp coop back up. It was a dryer box so it won't last the winter but would get me through the onset of laying. The temp coop...

    Old hen picking on pullets

my coop is not very large. about 22 sq ft with one 6 foot roost on one wall about 24 inches high. I think I'll add a smaller low roost for the welsummer in the opposite corner from where the LH likes to roost. Currently The 3 year old roosts by window on one end with the LH practically tucked...

Help with changing HOA covenants in Centennial CO!!

Read your indentures yourself to see if they allow chickens. My Trustees tried to say they were not allowed and sued me however after 2 years they dropped the case because they were going to lose. My indentures used canned wording that is present in many basic indentures across the country.

    A+D ointment uses?

It's like vaseline right? I use vaseline on combs to prevent frostbite.

    Old hen picking on pullets

I have a flock of 7 hens. my oldest girls are a 3 year old BR and a 18 month old brown leghorn (bantam). 3 months ago I merged 5 - 8 week old pullets. They did fine no blood but the big girls did chase the little girls and the two groups hung apart for most of the last 3 months. They are...

To wash. Or not to wash. That, is the question.

I never wash. If they are dirty, even a little bit, I scramble them and feed it back to the chickens but honestly that is rare.

    Merging the flock

I guess I am not going there since I have never had a hen spend more time in the nest boxes than is absolutely necessary to lay an egg. I guess I'm sticking to my heating pad momma. Thanks for all the good info.

    Merging the flock

Tell me more about broody raising baby chicks. Do I just pick a hen, put her in my brooder box and hope she adopts them. I've never had a broody hen so I don't know what to look for. Usually I start them in a dog cage maybe 3 square feet then add an appliance box about two weeks. when I'm...

    Merging the flock

If I merge baby chicks early how to I feed the chicks chick feed and the adults layer feed? i know you shouldn't feed layer feed until they are ready to lay. In the past I have just merged the flocks when i run out of chick starter usually about 12 weeks still early but 4-6 weeks seems really...
