I am prepping my outdoor brooder for chicks arrive next week and I am making a couple of panic doors for an early integration protocol. @azygous you mention in your article that the doors are 5" x 7". That seems really big, now that I am sketching it out. I have medium sized chickens...
All right everyone, I need some flock culling advice
Right now I have 8 chickens total with 6-8 birds being the ideal number for our family in terms of production. Of our 8 birds, 4 are going through their 2nd molt and 4 are going through their first molt and we are collecting 1 egg per day...
I have a persistent broody so I want to finally let her have a try at some eggs. She started brooding yesterday (Monday) but I probably can't get any fertile eggs until next week. Is it reasonable to let her sit on dummy eggs for that long? Newbie here . . . .
Last month we obtained a couple of white battery birds at the end of a research study. They are six months old and enjoying the free life. I assumed they were White Leghorns but after looking at picture here on BYC, I realize they could be White Stars. How do you tell the difference. In...
Just came in from building my grow out coop for the 2 new girls arriving this week from McMurray. I have 4 adult EEers and need a space to keep them separate for a couple of weeks until they got to know each other.
I up-cycled a dog house that had been in my yard, unused for the past 5 years...
My gals have been on a nipple waterer since they have been 5 days old. They took to it great and I loved it. They are now 22 weeks old and I noticed that they run to the dog bowl when I let them out in the morning. I clean out and check my nipple water 2 x a week. It is working fine. I...
My girls are now 17 weeks old so I am doing coop maintenance and uncovering the nest boxes. My coop is 4' wide with a roost bar spanning the coop at 47" wide. I have 5 chickens and always intended to add a second roost bar when they got older. At this age, they all crowd around one side of...
I am in Athens and would like 2 additional juvenile chickens for my flock. I can't afford shipping prices so I would love to find someone within driving distance.
I know there are some nice BYC folks here from Georgia. Anyone have a few extra Red Stars or something similar to sell?
I...
Yay! We are finally done with the coop. It's been a work in progress for the past 3 months. Inspired by the Garden Coop and Wichita Coop, modified to fit the salvaged materials we already had.
Coop is 4'W x 6'D
Run is 10'W x 6'D
Community nesting box 12" x 32"
New home to 6 EE pullets...
I am building my coop that will be structured like the Wichita Coop, but with a roof like the Garden Coop. Looking at the images, it doesn't appear to have any hardware cloth securing the top of the coop, between the roof joists on the perimeter. Anyone have experience with this?
