I recently moved some of my birds around and had a hen hold out on laying for four days...and than she produced this lovely egg!
Next to her usual eggshell colour.
Just wanted to share. :)
I agree. Culls are what a deep freezer is for.
I also believe one should fully disclose, to the best of their knowledge, whether or not their birds carry what others may consider ‘undesirable’ genes or traits.
Because when push comes to shove, no one is responsible for the quality of birds...
What Is an APA/ABA "Breed" Anyways???
Scroll down to post 18 of the above link for the single best explanation I’ve read on what defines an APA breed.
Actually I recommend reading the entire thing if you have the time. You will not regret it.
I think you may have misunderstood me, or I didn't explain myself very well.
Because if you want to show, (and that's fantastic btw :)) the SOP is the only thing that matters. Same goes when breeding to standard. Or it should anyway...
I raise the splash variety, and call them Splash...
Not trying to ruffle any feathers, but I have to wonder why so many folks on here get hung up on whether their birds are 'pure bred' or not...the better question in my mind is are the birds up to standard. :)
A breeder I greatly respect and admire once wrote, "Names are labels. Types are...
Yes, it can happen and should be selected against. Autosomal red (AR) can be the dickens to get rid of, but it is possible.
Quality also depends on the breeder and how intense of selection pressure they use on their birds. I would hazard a guess and say the birds your seeing the leakage on are...
I've read that thread over so many times I'm sure it's etched on the back of my eyelids by now, haha...
What I'd love to find is someone interested in working on the same project that's close enough to exchange birds with...a partner in crime so too speak... :) A gal can dream anyway, lol...
No problem. :)
I'd like to know if anyone has blue Ams based on birchen (ER) instead of extended black and IF (this is the big question, hehe) the lacing expresses better on such a base?
A neat way to tell the difference between edging and lacing is to take the feather in question and put it up against a white surface. The edging will be clear against the white and the lacing will be dark. The reason being true lacing results from more pigmentation along the outside of each...
Wow, those Andies are stunning!
I know that's the kinda lacing I'm after! Not sure I'll ever get there, but half the fun is in trying. ;)
Heatherscooby77, do you have any pictures of your project birds? I'd sure love to see them when/if you had time. :)
No problem. Chick down can be tricky sometimes. Blacks can look blue, blue can appear black, but splash is always yellowish in my experience. :)
If you don't mind me asking, where is your stock from? I'm always on the look out for quality lines of Ameraucanas in Canada.
You would call them by their colour. Blue Ameraucana, Splash Ameraucana, etc. Blues, blacks, and splashes can be bred together to produce all three varieties, if so desired. :)
Legs should darken up with age, though the exact shade of slate varies and can be dependent on the variety.
Ameraucanas should have white skin. Not yellow.
