Where can I buy a hat for my chicken?

I have one chicken with a large crown. The other chickens peck at it keeping scabs on it. My kids worry its frostbite but it hasn't gotten real cold yet, down to 28 on a few nights. She is tucked in with her flock though. But I thought a little hat would fix both problems, whichever one it is...

    Adopted two silkies

I have a hodgepodge of hens and was given two silkies. They have integrated well with the flock but seem more nervous and fragile. Will they need a heat lamp this winter?

New chicken owners and small dog

Our small dog, a dauschound, reacted the same way with our first batch of chicks. He got to them the next day and killed every last one. We are careful now, to keep him from the chicks.

    Amazing story

My kids were out playing with the chickens. My daughter came running in and said one of the chickens was scratching and squawking at something in the dirt. She looked and it was a ring. When she showed it to me I couldn't believe it. The chicken found my husbands platinum wedding band he had...

Things i never knew about chickens...

A few weeks later and I'm still enjoying my girls. I have learned that they are protective of each other. Two of my girls have decided they are in charge. They are very suspicious of my cat. They run at him and chase him away. We also had our first egg! So exciting!

    Handling hens

My six hens should be getting to egg laying age soon. My kids love to play with them though and carry them around the yard. The girls seem to just tolerate it. Will this stress them out causing them to not lay? Is it possible to break an egg inside the chicken from handling them?

Things i never knew about chickens...

Since starting this post I have learned sand is way better than pine shavings. It has been raining almost daily for three weeks. Mucking out their run was a necessity. With sand I just take it clean, it's not a soppy mess and the girls seem happy with it.

It's hilarious to watch my birds fight over a worm. One grabs it and the rest chase it till they manage to get a piece.

The happier my girls are the happier I am. Chickens are actually very pretty. Chickens don't like the dark. They have big personalities. Chicken doesn't taste as good as it used to;) *add yours

How do I safely introduce my dogs to the chickens?

My Doxie is completely untrustworthy. He too shakes and whines when he sees them but I have learned the hard way it's because he is a chicken killer. We just have to keep him inside when the chickens are out.

    Hot days

I took a can of corn and froze a bit in each cup of a muffin tin. They loved their frozen treats. Oh, frozen berries were also a big hit.
