probably lacks calcium. provide oyster shell on the side.

oh no...not another feeder question. keeping birds and rats out? treadle designs?

I suppose you could raise the bucket at night and lower in the morning. but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a feeder you can leave alone and keep rats away.

    Rat proof feeder options.

I recently changed to a hanging bucket with a toggle...seems to signifficantly reduce the spilled waste and thus reduce the attraction to rats.

    Rooster or No Rooster?

I'm kinda thinking getting a baby rooster. I have all hens, backyard in the city. Not "supposed" to have a roo but they are in the city. My neighbor has a rooster, well it sounds like one. I DON'T need fertile eggs. But a good protector might be in order. I have baby chics...one week old...

Can scratch replace layer feed for just 3 days without harming my girls?

kinda like eating nothing but cake for 3 days...not ideal but ain't gonna kill ya. maybe toss them some cat food? chickens will eat ANYTHING... Do they get to roam outside the coop? they will scratch and eat bugs and grass...

    are chickens "racist"?

not racist in that they hate each other or fight each other. but they definitely tend to stick with their own kind.

    are chickens "racist"?

I have noticed that my same species chickens seem to always form their own "flock". My first round was a few RIR and Sex Link chics all at the same time. they almost immediately split up and did not mix. I took that as a good indicator the breeds will not willingly mix with other breeds...

    2x2s for roosting poles

A bird's feet are designed to grasp around a branch. regardless of the diameter, it should not be totally flat. Ducks? well they don't seem to roost much...

Is it cruel to have chickens if they can't free range?

mine free range the backyard. If I leave them cooped up, large 6x12, they are not happy. they really love to roam the front yard with fresh grass

    2x2s for roosting poles

2x2 with beveled/rounded edges. they are birds. nature designed them to roost on branches. Branches grow round in nature. Don't try to out-think mother nature.

    Chick Brooder question.

I think my first was a large cardboard box. it expanded into 6 connected boxes within a month. Then they went to the outside coop. Easy and toss away when done. depending on how long you keep them indoors you can keep expanding. cut small holes/windows in the sides or chicken wire on top.
