    Black coturnix egg

Over production of pigment right before the egg reaches the vent. Very cool! But nothing to be concerned about, in my experience.

    Thinking of calling it quits.

What breed are you trying to incubate? Some have fertility issues which may be a contributing factor to bad hatches.

To incubate or not to incubate

Ok occasional "people food" treats for geese?

I would be careful with giving him spinach. There is a lot of iron in it.

    Free Range BBB Turkeys

I chose mixes. They are primarily royal palm, but I didn't care too much about breed in particular. I've heard great things about the slates. Big and docile, really good birds.

    Are ducks tame?

If handled enough as ducklings, they will be friendly. Just like with chickens. But ducks seem to be more flock oriented than chickens, with slightly less individual personalities. But, they are a great joy, and you shouldn't be concerned about friendliness too much. Just pick a more docile...

    Call Duck help needed please.

You can offer the ducklings crumbles almost immediately after a hatch. I moisten it for them so it is easier to eat. I only do this for about 4-6 days, then they seem to have no problem with it dry. Have you checked the eggs in the nest? I don't know if the hen will even let you, but if you...

    HELP!!! Unexpected Addition

What kind of goose is it? So, exciting! I've raised geese indoors and have successfully introduced a house goose to domestic fowl of all kinds, pretty much. When the goose is tiny, like a few days old, they have trouble grazing on their own. Grass clippings are great, but cut short at first...

    Free Range BBB Turkeys

I speak from both experience and reading. After getting heritage turkeys, man can I tell! They are so much more agile and stronger. They just seem so full of life, comparatively. I definitely recommend heritage turkeys for anyone who regularly raises Turkeys and have a bit of pasture for them...

    House Goose Thread

It's tough to manually hatch birds. One of the two goslings I have got stuck at the internal pipping stage and need help. I checked on her every couple hours and carefully removing more and more shell and membrane while hydrating her. I'm surprised she made it at all! Took about 4-5 days from...

Canada Geese Question - age: old or young ?

I don't know for sure, but it is a potential problem for older geese. They have fewer eggs and those eggs aren't viable after a certain age. Canada geese can live a very long time, but I don't know when is their peak.

When will the avian flu pass?! RESPOND FAST!!!!!

Regardless of the bird flu causing such a problem, ducks just carry all sorts of things that can cause problems. All birds that survive are stronger, and will pass on their immunity to their offspring

    Trimming wings

I prefer a bilateral wing clip mostly for bird ego, but never before 4 weeks. Turkey's ARE powerful, but that power is very much a part of them unless you clip their wings ENTIRELY, not just flight feathers. Still is hard for me to do that, so I wait, keep them happy, and only clip flight feathers.

Canada Geese Question - age: old or young ?

Sounds older. Poor things. :( Our very young 2 year old is. Capable of producing offspring, and he seems very unprotective for a Canada goose. But he is active and prolific.

    House Goose Thread

So, this is the house goose thread! Yay! So, I started with a Canada gosling, orphaned poor thing, in a tiny 1 bdrm apt with my husband, 4 cats, 3 ferrets, and eventually 2 puppies. Now that was quite the adventure! And now I'm raising 2 more goslings inside. I love birds, but I REALLY love...
