What is the best time to start brooding eggs under a hen?

Yes, my plan was to raise the chicks myself once they were hatched as my hens don't usually brood and for the reason that yes, the hen might lead the chicks into the water. Many of my birds are second or even third hand so are often shy.

I have 2/5 eggs starting to unzip, I think, they both have pierced the eggs, and are pipping like nuts! I'm so nervous, my first hatch and first-time chicken raiser. Hen - hatched eggs, if that helps, for about 1/2 an hour or so I have heard them pipping and they have pierced the eggs, like I...

Hmmm. Not sure how long she has been back on the nest, but my hen has layer quite a few eggs lately, and has accepted a golf ball as an egg apparently. Inducing brooding?

I am thinking of letting one of my hens incubate and possibly hatch a fertile egg from a friend's farm. My hens never attempt to brood, is there any way I can provoke/induce brooding without a roo around?

    Pecking in chicks?

My roughly 5-6 week old chicks are pecking at me when I handle them, I have been training them with small pieces of craisin (dried cranberries)n, could this have anything to do with it? How can I stop them pecking? Usually they seem unsure and peck pretty gently, but sometimes they are painful...
