They definitely cap over the ground/bedding, in no time.
I do deep bedding, stirring every day and adding 1/2 to 3/4" of new shavings, and that barely keeps up.
I try to keep my brooder smelling like granola bars.
Freedom rangers have a fair amount of dark meat in comparison to CX (the least amount). I wouldn't say they are the highest dark meat content, but they grow quickly and do very well in most pastured conditions.
Why would you caponize and then slaughter at 12 weeks? Its like slaughtering a CX at 32 days. Not going to get much out of it.
Normally you'd let them run around for 24+ weeks and get HUGE
So really, I would just ignore the whole "legally" part of this. Couple of birds, sold prior to the slaughter, that's a pet transaction.
Here is the Florida law

Has anybody here had a flock wiped out from disease? Please share your experience, and what you did to fix the problem.(excluding deaths due to weight)
I lost a flock to Pneumonia, it was my fault. I didn't brood the lil guys long enough and we had a cold/wet patch in the early spring...
I use it, but not for confinement. Its to keep predators out. I have a tractor for confinement.
BTW, once you do CXs on pasture you will never go back. The manure is spread out, the flies cannot use it, the stench is less....
two words, chicken sausage
I have a kitchen aid mixer, and got a sausage grinder from bed bath and beyond. picked my own fennel, sage, and dried peppers from last year. It tasted so good my wife got up from the dinner table and ordered 50 chicks.
you get about 2 years of good production from a hen. If you want to cull them, I would put them in a roasting pan at 250 for a few hours. Then pick the meat for some good pulled chicken to vacpak and freeze.
They are interested in the hens, but probably don't know why at this point. I have noticed with young roosters, if anyone gets sqwacking too much they start fighting.
Eventually they start prancing and dancing around, trying to attract the hens, but at first they just beat them up.

All told, my last batch cost me about $6.50/bird. They averaged 4.5lbs. That's around $1.45/lbs. Not sure what you mean by on the cheap, do you mean free?
