My girls aren't sleeping in their coop

Hello, I see there have been similar questions but I have a slightly different question. I have 3 birds. One is 6.5 and the other two are 1.5 years old. They all get along well and the older bird is quite happy to be the top bird in seniority. The old coop (a kit I bought) got worn out so I...

I have a 6 1/2 year old Ameraucana that is still laying regularly. Sally is amazing. She is Aunt Sally to Woodstock and Snoopy now (about 1 1/2 years old). Woodstock is a Speckled Sussex and Snoopy is a Silverlaced Wyandotte. All are quite friendly and Sally is happy to be their Aunt. Sally was...

    not laying any eggs

I don't think that's it either. I walk the yard every day checking for new hiding places and I haven't found anything. My coonhound hasn't found any hiding spots either because she would have grabbed the egg and eaten it. That's the bad part; the good part is the broken shell would be near where...

    not laying any eggs

I apologize; I didn't think to mention it but they have free range of the back yard so there is plenty of room, shade, water, shelter places. And they can hang out in the coop if they want to. They are on Purina Layena with the oyster shell. I can't remember the exact name of the feed. They...

    not laying any eggs

I had 3 hens but my Columbian Wyandotte passed away suddenly about 3 weeks ago. Before she passed away the only ones laying were her and my Easter Egger. The Easter Egger had been picking on the Barred Rock and the Barred Rock has not laid any eggs since May. All 3 hens were getting along until...

Straw or hay for nest boxes- preference?

I'm a first time chicken owner too and have had my girls for 4 years now. I use large pine shavings that I get at TSC. They're easy to clean up, a thick layer in the winter keeps the coop a bit more cozy, inexpensive and I like the fresh scent the have.

Love the idea with the stairs!! My girls will come part way up the stairs to my back deck but having their own stairs would be fun for them. I have a squirell feeder that is shaped kind of like a picnic table with benches and it has a spike coming up from the top of the table. I zip tie that to...

Comment by 'lucymarcysally' in article 'To Insulate or Not to Insulate...'

I have 3 large birds that are almost 4 years old now. They have a coop with a run underneath and access to the backyard. In the winter I put a sheet of cardboard on the metal floor in the coop so it doesn't feel so cold and there are extra pine shavings covering the floor too. There are 2 nest...

    Limping Chicken

Marcy seems to be doing better. A couple of people suggested it might be a sprained ligament or something along that line and that it would take time to heal. I've been keeping an eye on her, she's still eating and drinking fine, the others aren't picking on her and the limo seems to be getting...

    Limping Chicken

She came from a hatchery and I think/believe they vaccinate their birds for Marek's but I'm not positive. I will try to get a video of her limping. Thank you

    Limping Chicken

Hello, I have a 3 year old Columbian Wyandotte that is limping pretty badly on her left leg. I took her to the vet last Saturday and she weighs about 5 pounds, is not egg bound, does not have bumble foot, has no broken bones and no mites. He put her on some anti-inflammatory medicine for 3 days...

    Hot Weather = Less Eggs?

It's been horribly hot here this season and my girls aren't laying very much either. They have plenty of shady places and extra water including a huge plant saucer of water that serves as a wading pool. I've just started making them corn-sickles to snack on. I did it last year and they seemed to...

     Free chicken coop signs!

I just found out about the free chicken signs from Purina and I know it's late in the game but is it still possible to get a sign? And is there a way to sign up for a notification when this happens again? It sounds like a yearly thing that Purina does. Thank you

     Free chicken coop signs!

I keep my feed in a large plastic tote in the garage; it's covered and away from the weather. But I have a smaller tote out by the coop and inside that tote is a plastic container with lid (used to be for kitty litter) and I keep a smaller quantity near the chicken coop just so it's easier for...

Comment by 'lucymarcysally' in article 'Ten Reasons You Should Spend Ten Extra Minutes With Your Flock Every Day'

I'm a first time chicken owner and just love my girls! I only have 3, Lucy, Marcy and Sally, and it's the perfect number for me. Each girl has her own personality and they all come running to me if they so much as hear the door open. Sally is kind of a loner and Marcy and Sally are pretty close...

    Chicken breeds

I'm still pretty new to having chickens; just got my girls last spring. I have one each of Aeraucana, Columbian Wyandotte and Barred Rock. Each girl has her own distinct personality and they all lay almost daily. The store that had the chicks really was not familiar with identifying the breeds...

How long before my molting chicken lays?

I read about a few "treats" to try while molting like yogurt and even dry cat food. So I tried them both and the girls love the "treats" especially the yogurt :)

How long before my molting chicken lays?

I have a 7 month old Wyandotte that appears to be finally finishing her molt; she is starting to get neck feathers back. Marcy has been molting for about a month and she is only 7 months old. Most of her neck feathers have changed from being pin feathers to regular feathers and it looks like she...
