I had previously heard of the term 'Curly' applied to a chicken that has a frizzle gene from -each- parent. Today I read a thread that called them 'Frazzled'.
Is there a difference between the terms Curly and Frazzle? Is it a dialect difference? An official vs. casual terminology difference?
Hey All, My mother just sent this series of photos to me. (we share the chicken addiction) Apparently she was getting ready to take a picture of something completely different, when the rooster went after Dad! Its a bit scarry, actually! My mother, on the other hand, is apparently part of the...
Here's a couple of pictures of my Mom's new chickens in the south pacific country of Papua New Guinea. These are a little less common in that they are all white (probably have some comerical leghorn mixed in) but you can still see the long-legged-ness, distinctly fan like tail on the hen, longer...
Is anyone a cat behavioural psychologist?
Over the last week sonia the cat has started climbing up my leg. I'll standing somewhere in the house, minding my own business (i.e. cooking dinner, brushing my hair) and suddenly there is a cat affixed to my knee cap with all four sets of claws. Then...
My mother lives in a tropical country on the equator. She has a couple chickens now, and has had chickens on and off for the last 25 years, both where she is, and in Texas. Here in the land of winter & summer, we assume that a hen is -more- likely to go broody in spring/summer, than in winter...
Just joking about the roo, actually. We'll probably keep him until spring, and eat him after we get a broody hen to set.
BUT, we have a very lovely pygmy goat doe, who is just in the way...because we have our goats for milking. She is 2 1/2 years old. Light tan & white, very friendly, and...
This is a bantam mix hen, who got into a 3 hour battle with a young cockerel on Thursday. Most of her head feathers are plucked out, her comb horribly torn up.
I cleaned the injuries, have applied antibiotic ointment, and the head and comb are scabbed over and looking good. The swelling has...
When I let the chickens out to roam this morning, two of the bantams were fiercer than usaual with they morning hierarchy scuffle. So much so that I stood and watched them for 5 minutes. Both had their hackles raised, leaping up into the air at each other, each pulling out the other's feathers...
I am so pleased with what I did today...
I butchered 3 roosters. Did the whole thing, from head off to into the pan.
I've helped with butchering since I was 3 years old. That first time, Grandma had me help her butcher a rooster that attacked and scratched my face. Since then I've gotten good...
We now have a group of banties that think the goat pen is a wonderful place. They discovered it and want to live there. (really like the warm roosts - aka - goat backs)
We would be happy to keep them in there...(its actually useful for many reasons)....but there is one major problem. I can't...
justusnak rescued 20 bantams (13 hens&7roosters) from a very neglectful place. They need new homes. Any Ohio folks want to take some of these chickens?
Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield, Columbus?
I live in N. Columbus, and I have the time, and am willing to drive, if I could find 3-4 others in...
My three incubator hatched babies are 1 week old, and here are some pictures. I've never had such black chicks before. They are barnyard mix....maybe australorp, &/or black orp.
"We don't want our picture taken!"

I was just reading the Meyer Hatchery Catalogue, and on page 4 there was a weird statement. I've never heard of this before. Anyone know about this:
"Laying Hens: ...... Don't feed fruit to layers, since it can cause them to stop laying and it may take as long as 6 weeks for them to start...
I've got a pet chicken named Coconut. 6 weeks or so my brother-i-l heard me saying I wanted a chick for a pet. He surprised me with a 5 week old one from an Amish/Mennonite barnyard. he says he chose this one because "the grown up white chickens were wild looking, not regular ones" That seems to...
oh my gracious!!! I just took the eggs out of their turning rack and set them to hatch. Its day 19. One of my eggs cheeped at me! I can't believe it! My heart is going crazy. It peeped again and then it made a crack in the shell.
Thankfully its right under the 'bator window, so I can stare at...
I have a mutt chick (8 weeks) that has leg feathering. She never preens her leg feathers, and they are getting crumpled, and she bangs them into things and causes the pore/base of the feather to bleed.
Do your feather footed chickens care for their own leg feathers? Or do you have to groom them...
I've lived with chickens for most of my life, but trying to incubate eggs is so scary!! I've had nightmares twice in the last 4 days, and now I think one of them is starting to smell. argg.
I wish I could candle them now, but only one is white, and as a newbie, I don't see enough to make it...
I'd like to hear your opinion....
Got a dozen fertile eggs from someone locally, and they are going in the incubator tomorrow. This person has never 'artificially' incubated eggs before, and I told her "unwashed but relatively clean, unrefridgerated, new eggs."
What I got was 6 clean ones and...
