Just an update on keeping chickens in the basement, if you may be considering doing something like this. Thus far, everything is going very well. Lights are on timers and come on at 5 AM and go off at 7PM. I have a nightlight that is automatic and keeps a dim glow on the far end of the basement...
the basement run is about 3-4" deep in shavings, which they scratch in almost nonstop. they get cracked corn, meal worms and grass clippings on an alternate schedule. I am building a box to hold sand today for the dust bath. Thanks for your reply and now I know I'm not the only one. By the way...
after getting our first egg from both hens in just two days, they decided to tell the whole world, starting at sunrise, that they were in lay. Boy, what a couple of loud mouths. We were in a panic, since our hens are sort of " outside the law" We envisioned our local swat team pulling in the...
congrats on that first egg :) We got our first on Christmas eve and been getting them every day since, there's nothing quite like it is there? chickens are strangely enjoyable.......Happy New Year
I have a cherry egger that never makes a sound when laying, on the other hand, my buff orpington can be heard all over creation. Since we have a town ordinance against " fowl" keeping, I'm afraid we will be reported, fined and have to get rid of these beautiful birds. Is there anything we can do...
Well, we were thrilled when Cherry, our cherry egger hen, gave us our first egg a couple days ago. Now, Buffy, our buff orphington hen has laid her first as well. We have waited for this for months and now we have our Christmas gifts from our wonderful hens. The color difference between the eggs...
Merry Christmas to you as well........who would have ever thought that an egg, from a beautiful red hen, could bring such joy. Life is way to complicated these days and that egg was a blessing
My wife first, and now me. We are 2 happy old people, what a Christmas gift

well, since my post yesterday about the behavior of Cherry, my Cherryegger hen.....guess what! I got my first egg this morning:) We are proud parents. Her egg was a beautiful light brown, medium size with a nice firm shell. I guess all the things I learned here paid off, she did good and so...
My 2 girls are 22 weeks old, on laying mash, oyster shells, and grit since 20 weeks. Both started squating and let me pet them several days ago. Their combs and wattles are bright red.......can I expect and egg soon ?.........one Cherry Egger and one Buff orpington
Hi, I have one Cherry egger and a Buff orpington, both are about 23 weeks old. Cherry has large bright comb and wattles and has started submissive squating in the last 3 days. Both have been on laying crumbles, crushed oyster shell and grit since they were 20 weeks. Are they getting close to...
just to check in with other neweggs, I'm stuck in the " town limits" and had a long time desire to have a couple of chickens. sort of on my bucket list you might say. So we built a nice coop and run, just right for 2 hens, and found out we can't have them. Seems you can do about anything in the...
the basement is heated and cooled with humidity control.... The pen I put down there is large with vinyl flooring and about 2-3 inches of pine shavings. They will have a roost and nest box. my real worry is how to light them up and for how long. and yes, they can go outside, I built a nice coop...

I'm new to this,so call me dumb for thinking of this......but here goes......I have 2 new hens, one Buff Orphington and a Cherry Egger and they are 11 weeks old. I have become very attached to these ladies and just discovered my town frowns upon " poultry keeping". I have built a nice run and...
