    Broody Hen Thread!

I've had 2 over the years that plucked their chest. Both were Black Australorps, not related to each other. One was ten or twelve years ago and the other one is sitting on seven eggs right now.

    Broody Hen Thread!

I had two hens go broody last Friday, I let my granddaughter give them each 8 eggs. Of course the new coop I built last summer specifically for broody hens has 40 2 week old chicks in it. Dang chicken math anyway.

    Too young?

I think the 8 week old chicks should be fine. It might be a little cold for the 3 week old.

Well I had the feed store order me 50 pullets, so I guess I'll see what kind of birds Hoovers has.

Thanks for the reply, my feed store is switching to Hoovers this year. I hadn't heard of them until a couple of weeks ago.

Has anyone gotten chicks from Hoovers hatchery? I'm considering getting some pullets from them.

    Leaving Pop Door Open Overnight

I leave mine open but it's also fortnox. It's a 12' x 12' covered run wrapped in hardware cloth with a 24" deep concrete footing, inside a 50' x 100' x 6'high fence with 4 hot wires around that. I also have a pair of labs that patrol outside the perimeter.

    Aggressivish rooster

If I had a rooster attacking me the last thing I would do is bend over. Lowering your face would be dangerous if you asked me. I've been spurred several times, I was spurred through my jeans when I was a kid and still have the scars. Suggesting to someone (possibly a child ) that they bend over...

    Getting Commercial Layers to roost?

I bought 20 1 year old comercial layers a few years ago. I put an extra rooster I had in with them to help calm them down. After a few days some of them started to roost with him (4 or 5 never did). Most of them figured out the nesting boxes (mine are on the floor) but I had some that would lay...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I wish I had a broody right now. My 6 year old granddaughter was in charge of broody hens and chicks last year. She's positive every hen she sees in a nest box is broody! LOL. I have to admit I'm getting a little anxious myself.

That's one of the bad things about keeping chickens, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. Im guessing you're pullet will be happier with with only one rooster around and the rooster you keep will definitely be happier.

Do I have an aggressive rooster?

I wouldn't trust any rooster around small children. When my granddaughter comes over my rooster goes into a 10' x 12' covered pen for the day.

For those of you who free-range...

I free range my chickens most of the time and usually have a rooster running with them. Most roosters won't provide much protection from a determined predator. I've had some that fought off some hawks, some didn't survive the encounter. Some roosters will take on anything that bothers the hens...
