Evening all! I hung out around the coop for a bit of mama and chick / everyone else visitation time. I ended up swatting at a couple hens that got a bit too mean with the chicks. Mama got in a small pecking order match, but she won so that part went well. The last straw before I put them away...
We found a 3rd nest this morning! this one was in the fire pit...the 5 eggs are covered in soot!
The hubby put brand new hay in the coop nesting boxes and added in a set of make shift cubbies (cinder blocks standing on end, spaced about 12 inches apart with a large board on top.) For today, I...
Well my egg saga keeps getting more complicated!
I thought they weren't laying well, so I tried to specifically give them extra protein to help with any molting. I then realized that some eggs were being eaten. :barnie I kept finding the wet spots in the nesting boxes AND dried yolk on other...
Hello! New goat owner from Pennsylvania here!
My husband and I went and bought 2, 3 month old Pygmy Goats at a livestock auction Wednesday. We were actually hoping for something larger, we are trying to give my son experience before he begins showing Boers in the county fair next summer, the...
interestingly enough, they no longer show chickens at the Huntingdon county fair (maybe worried about disease transmission?) That was what he wanted to do at first, show chickens!
Well, we officially own goats now...just in case we weren't busy before!:th:lau
My 10 year old wants to show market goats in the Huntingdon County Fair next year and is joining 4H. We went to the livestock auction in Belleville yesterday and bought him two 3 month old Pygmy Goats to start with...
The fact that the mama is brand new is certainly part of the problem. She is also smaller then our black sex links (maybe a little bantam in her) and they are fairly territorial and feisty. The BSL hens actually ganged up on and almost killed one of our OB pullets this summer.)
They can all see...
Evening all!
We added to our flock in the last week. We got two from a friend who didn't want to winterize her coop for the two girls. The next day I had two jumbo eggs in my coop that were different from mine, so we know they laid right away.
Then husband and I went to the Belleville Animal...
Hi all!
I have been absent from BYC for a month or 2. It seems like life just keeps getting in the way and I keep plugging along.
The results of our spring chicks from TSC were not exactly like I hoped. Our 12 chicks produced 7 cockerels and 5 pullets. While waiting for them to fill out a...
I guess they were just looking at the comb development etc.
I don't really know how someone sexed them since they all look different. I have been able to tell with the BO's cause you have significant difference in comb development right in front of you, but I remember being told that one of my...
Morning all!
Well, I showed my chick picks on the "cockerel or pullet" thread and was told that 4 of my 6 Ameraucanas appeared to be cockerels. It is certainly not what I wanted to hear since that would mean just 5 out of 12 were pullets. :hit I have ZERO luck! Last year I bought 6 pullets...
They are all 7-8 weeks old. They are straight run Ameraucanas from TSC. I would love input as to whether they are male or female.

Morning All! I tried to get on several times while the site was down and then I got busy! Hope all is well with you all!:ya
I have begun the long process of guessing male or female for this years group of chicks:barnie:fl
The BO's have separated themselves nicely into 2 groups: comb/waddle...
