Hey Karen
Thanks! I will check out all of the books and sources. I'd love to produce something cool and different once I'm all set up down here. I used to do a lot of captive breeding of reptiles (mainly snakes) and it will be interesting to see how similar or different chicken genetics are...
Good question about the recognition of breeds in Costa Rica. I don't really know, but I suspect that there is no governing body for registered chicken breeds here. I have never seen a poultry exhibition and while I have met several breeders here, I really have to question the "pure-bredness" of...
Hey RR
I'm an engineer too...software development. What kind of work do you do?
Anyway, I think your post was right on. And, yes, I think we all agree that all breeds are man-made because they take some number of generations of very selective breeding to produce.
Interesting that people can...
What? Forget Linnaeus? Ah, OK, what the hell. He was just lucky that binomial nomenclature ended up working out with plant and animal taxonomy even after Darwin figured out evolution.
Anyway, Karen, great post. Thanks for replying.
So, chicken taxonomy doesn't conform to the same rules as...
The biological taxonomy of the common chicken is Gallus gallus domesticus. In other words, this would mean that any "breed" of chicken, whether it's a leghorn or a silkie or whatever, is exactly the same genus, species and subspecies as any other. So, a "breed" of chicken, then, is nothing more...
Great looking birds, Shannon! As soon as I get my import permits here in costa rica, I would love to buy a couple dozen day old chicks from you. I will stay in touch.
yes, ideal is where I was planning on going because I travel to TX every couple months. I doubt they ship to costa rica so I will try to arrange something where I pick up a shipment from them when i'm in TX and drive it with me to the airport on the day I fly back.
Thanks! we'll give it a try! my target date for getting into the new house is February, so hopefully by sometime in march, i'll be able to start getting my flocks going.
Hey there NewTico
From my experience, the big volume hatcheries deal in two types of chickens only: ponedoras (layers) and broilers. the ponedoras seem to be a rhode island red cross that can be sexed at hatching. chicks for both of these types of chickens can be bought at feed stores.
there...
I hope this is the right forum to ask these questions, so here goes:
what is the general quality that can be expected when ordering from large hatcheries?
obviously large hatcheries aren't selling show quality birds, but with careful flock management and selective breeding, can show quality...

Hey There
I sent you a PM....don't know if you got it.
Is it easy to find pure breeds in Panama or are they mostly mixed up (mutts, so to speak) like here in Costa Rica?

Hey there B.Hromada
I lived in Cutler Ridge in the early 90s until Hurricane Andrew destroyed the neighborhood. Lived in Miramar after that. I was always an apartment dweller then so I didn't have space for outdoor...
Hey there down in the Red Lands.....I lived in Cutler Ridge until Hurricane Andrew knocked me outta there. Spent some time in Miramar after that and then left FL for Austin. Now I'm in Costa Rica.....but I get back to South Florida every now and then to see friends.

I have a couple properties here in Costa Rica and I'm just getting started breeding and raising chickens, pheasants and quail and I plan to expand my project to...
