Over the last month, I've lost at least 8 chickens(including two sitting hens) to a hawk and either a fox or cat. They free range during the day and are locked up at night. Due to number of chickens, I can't keep them all locked up. During the week, I'm usually gone from daylight till dark so...

I am very new to candleing eggs, and these are Very dark Maran eggs, possibly making it even harder for me to tell what is going on inside. Not feeling very good about it at this point. :(
Yesterday was day 17 of 21 in the nursery. Last night, I had let a heat lamp on an orphaned chick in the same room as the incubator. When I got home this evening, the thermometer inside the incubator read 104. Are they toast? I have kept the door shut to that room to try and keep the temp stable...
She kept getting weaker and weaker since yesterday. I stopped by the Vet but they don't diagnose chickens. She passed away earlier today. Guess I'll never know.
I received some eggs in the mail from a local Maran breeder yesterday. Been trying for two days to get the Little Giant still air incubator set just right. Temps have been up and down driving me mad. The breeder sent me 11 mixed from her Black Copper Maran, Black Maran, and Splash Maranhens...

Great info here. Most of my new hens aren't laying yet, only a few. I hope to have some start setting in the Spring. Not sure if they would even start setting this time of year anyway.
I'm contemplating hatching a few varieties of chicks from different breeders. Is there a safe way to mark and distinguish these as to tell what is what?
Good info. I do have two young Buff Orpingtons. My flock is pretty diverse, with multiple breeds. Haven't really thought about Silkes yet though, they kinda remind me of Poodles....... Not a Poodle fan. Lol
Is there a particular breed that is more apt to go broody more often? I was thinking about getting an incubator, but if I can have several broody hens to hatch eggs for me, that would work also. Thanks.
