Yes we have lots of trees on our property, and good hiding spots for them. We're still keeping them in our house at night as we're in the process of building their permanent home....last night they walked themselves into the house and out themselves to bed! Lol. It's going to be a shock to them...
@starrmar006
Oh they love us. A little too much, lol. We started training them from day one to follow us, in preparation of putting them in their coop at night. Now when we say Come here girls they all come running!
@Miss Lydia
Thanks for responding! The weather has been great, around 70. We have shade, food and a little pool in their temporary enclosure. They are always more than happy to come out of it, and will wander freely while I'm outside. As soon as they are left to their own devices they just kind...
Lol, the title says it all. This is my first experience with ducks, I have 10 5 week old ducklings. We've been putting them outside during the day in a temporary enclosure on our lawn. We've been letting them wander while we're home....and they don't really wander. They follow me if I'm outside...
10 beautiful ducklings from Metzer arrived happy and healthy last Wed! These are the first ducklings we've ever had and they are just a kick. Pretty skitzy though, lol. Will they calm down? Their setup is a 2x7 foot browser with the light on one end...they're getting non medicated chick starter...
Hi everyone, I'm happy to see a high desert section! I'm up in Lone Pine, and will be getting ten ducklings in March. Brand new to this, but very excited!
Thanks for the suggestion! I liked the idea of two, but am afraid they would all try to pile into one. We're getting two runners, and a friend told me they wouldn't socialize with the other ducks which is why I thought of different houses.
So we're just starting to draw the plans for our duck house. We'll be getting ten ducklings in March, and can't wait! So my question is....would it be better to build one long, large duck house, about 10x6, or could we build two smaller ones? I want to make sure they all have enough room, but...
Another question for all you lovely people! We ordered our ducklings and they are set to arrive 15 March. What size brooder box should we build for 10 ducklings? All I can find is info on chick brooders, so I thought I would ask on here. Something pretty simple in design, so I would also love...
I totally get you about the dog kennel, I would love to be able to do that! But with the racoons and the minks I would have to add wire anyway, which would substantially add to the cost.
We don't need to worry about dogs thankfully! Our farm is fully fenced. We're more worried about minks, racoons, and foxes. Maybe the occasional bobcat....it seems like we have all the top predators here, lol!
Sorry for all the questions! We would like to free range our ducks during the day and put them in at night. At what age should we allow all day free range? And does everyone actually close them in their house at night, or just their house/run combo? Thanks!
Thanks everyone! NFC, we're getting an assortment because we just can't make up our minds, lol. Runners, khaki campbells, golden harvest, and one cayoga. About 8 total to start with.
