Well, we've got a broody on our hands. Just marked & stuck 10 eggs under her. We'll see how it goes! :) Would much rather have "mama" take care of the chicks! The 8 chicks we got from the hatching are doing great. They spent the 1st week in the house (no heat lamp) then moved outside...

Welcome RacoonsBane! :) Romance here :) But I only have "barnyard" stock, not pure breeds like everyone else.

Well, it's been a while since I posted so here's a quick run-down on what's happened the last couple of months. Roosters are still alive (but not for long even if I have to do the deed myself) Incubator was finished and has been utilized. Put in 18 eggs. 2 weren't fertile and were removed...

Hiya braden! Romance here! And LOL I've got 11 roosters that need processing. No need for additional roo's here right now! ;) AND I have 18 eggs in a cooler-bator that DH finally built for me! ----------------- On a different note, our rabbit's are kindling and so far 3 of the 4...

Okay I couldn't resist posting lol

For months now I've been trying to get my DH to build me a home-made incubator. We bought everything and then things proceeded to sit and collect dust. Well, I finally got tired of waiting for him to do it for me, so about 10 days ago I took the cooler out and all the fittings, etc and...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I'm using wheat. I think I may have figured out why I'm getting mold on my fodder at days 5-6. It's been being kept pretty warm here in the house since it's been so cloudy and wet. I'm pretty sure it's the warmth in the house, the raised humidity because of the rain and not getting good...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Well, we started feeding the fodder to our 9 week old chicks and they absolutely love it. Our big girls were getting jealous so we started feeding them a little bit too. ;) We aren't yet getting the growth in one week that we expected, but I think it's because the plants weren't getting...

The local feed store has un-medicated "game-bird starter" for $15.00. But even adding $2.50 won't really make so much of a difference in the over-all scheme of things as to knock my hypothetical situation of it's tracks. Like I said ... this is all hypothetical until such a time as I...

Don't know for sure what it will really be, but the document I read on heritage chickens said that the average for a "fryer age" chicken was 2.5 - 4 pounds so I selected on the low side without going to the lowest with 3 lbs. "hypothetical" weight. Here is a direct link to the document on the...

Well, it's all a "theory" at this point and I wouldn't want to get anyone to get mad at me because "she said...." which is why I didn't post my numbers before! That being said .... I can not verify these numbers. They are all hypothetical and based on strictly numbers I've seen posted...

Since hubby is stuck at home due to medical issues he's been looking for things to do. Especially on cold wet dreary days like today. Well ... we've been discussing this whole fodder thing and the past couple days (when he's been outside building a new set of rabbit hutches) I've been...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I really like your set-up. I'm assuming the pipes on top are for an auto-watering system? How long have you been feeding fodder? About how many pounds of seed do you use on a daily/weekly basis to feed your 345 birds? I'm seriously contemplating an attempt at raising chicks to butcher size...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Okay, my husband said I'm not being "scientific" enough! LOL I didn't measure or weigh my grain before I started sprouting it, so I have no comparison on how well I'm doing. I told him my first three little trays were "experimental" just to see if we could do it. He insists that my "next...

    Growing fodder for chickens

NotAFarm - You stated that your set-up feeds 25 adult chickens. Is this all they get or do you suppliment with other feed? (i.e. pellets or ff) I'm interested in getting my 8 week old chicks off so much feed since we can't free-range them with our big chickens. Rooster hates them lol

    Growing fodder for chickens

THAT is a really good idea! I've been watching a thread on the SFG forums about using urine in the garden. Hmmm... *wonders how hubby would react to me using a bucket in the bathroom* I decided to "experiment" and see how things went. I'm on day 3 and have one tray of "green shoots", one...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I read this thread and now have 1 tray (one of those noodle bowls you get at the grocery for $0.99 lol) with sprouting wheat and another batch of wheat soaking. I'm going to try this for the roosters and our rabbits. May give some to the hens as a "treat". :)
